Domain Reminder

As it is almost June, mid-year, I suggest you check with your domain registrar to assure you have not forgotten to renew any of your domains. This is actually a practice you should employ monthly. You do not want to forget to renew your domains. There are a couple options to relieve you of this monthly chore.

Renew for a Number of Years
First you can renew domains for more than 1 year. This would relieve you of having to renew yearly. Of course if you have many domains this could be very costly, here are two more options.

Auto Renew Feature
Here are step by step instructions to setup the auto-renew feature using GoDaddy. By using auto-renew you can set up an automatic payment so your domains will be renewed automatically. Most registrars have multiple payment options such as either credit card, paypal or others. You can use one of these godaddy coupons when renewing.

Consolidate Domains
Yet another option is to consolidate your domains. You can consolidate the month and day that each domain is to renew. By doing this you would only need to renew your domains all at one time each year. Here are instructions to consolidate your domains so they expire at the same time if you use Go Daddy.

Superbowl Special DOTCO1099 for 65% Off .CO Domains

Be sure to take advantage of the .CO Coupon DOTCO1099 from GoDaddy for 65% off .CO domains which are regularly $30, now just $10.99 until May 31, 2011.

Imagine if someone typed in your .COM domain name and forgot the “M”. Where would they go? Hopefully to your site, but only if you own the .CO domain. If you obtain .CO domains to match your .COM you can simply redirect the traffic to your domain. Of course you do not need matching extensions but it is not a bad idea. You can also put any site you want at the .CO domain just as you would any other website.

CO Domain Coupon

CO Domain Coupon
As part of your domain strategy consider also getting a .co domain. You can use a co domains coupon and enter it at checkout. There is a promo code box on the right in the GoDaddy checkout and you simply enter DOTCO1099 to get $5 off a .CO domain.

* ! * Special : 65% Off .CO Domains * ! *

DOTCO1099 – 65% off .CO domains [ Click this Link ]

* works on .COM also , use the coupon code “DOTCO1099″ at checkout

Why get a .CO domain?
There are many reasons you may want to obtain a .CO domain. If you have .COM domains and someone were to type them in quickly and leave off the “M” as I do occasionally then they may go to another website if you do not own the .CO version and forward it to your site. You can create new sites or just protect those you have.

Domain Expiration Date Consolidation

Consolidate Domain Expiration Dates
I have written about this before however it is ideal for the end of the year. If you own multiple domains it can be a chore to keep track of when they need to be renewed. One way to do it is to change all their expiration dates to the same date. Currently when you register a domain, awebsite name, you register for a number of years. So the expiration date is either 12, 24, 36, etc. months away.

You may have renewal dates such as 1/15 , 2/17, 5/18, 6/20, 6/24, 7/15 etc. for all your domains. You can use a feature provided by GoDaddy to change all the expiration dates. You are charged on a pro-rated basis, so no more than you would normally pay. By changing them all to the same expiration date you will only have to renew your domains once a year. Such as 12/20, then every December you renew them. Much easier to remember.

website name consolidationHow to Consolidate Expiration Dates
With Go Daddy you log into your account and then go to the account management tab. Next choose the domain management link. You place a check mark in the box to the left of each domain you wish to consolidate. On the upper menu choose the renew icon by hovering over it. The menu (see image to the right of this text) will appear and you choose to consolidate. It is that simple, just follow the instructions.

First Non-Latin Character Domains Announced

If you are reading this site in English you may not realize that those using other languages do not have everything, such as domains, available in their native language. ICANN is the governing authority. ICANN was formed in 1998 and stands for the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers just added additional top level domains.

For the first time domains, known as ccTLD or Top Level Domains, will have non-Latin characters. It began this month, May 2010, when these country code top level domains were inserted in the DNS root zone. The countries are

  • Egypt: مصر (Egypt)
  • Saudi Arabia: السعودية (AlSaudiah)
  • United Arab Emirates: امارات (Emarat)

To date there has been a total of 21 requests for new top level domains representing 11 languages. Thirteen of them have successfully passed through what ICANN calls their “String Evaluation” (the second stage of the process) and are ready for the final stage of the process when the requesting country or territory initiates the request for TLD Delegation.

From the ICANN press release, as you can see there is a large population that can benefit from this:

Arabic has now become the first non-Latin script to be used as an IDN ccTLD. Arabic is among the most highly used languages on the Internet today. The Middle-East has an average Internet penetration of just over 20%, and shows a big potential for growth. Users in the region will now have easier access to the Internet, with the ability to use their primary language for the entire domain name.
