Total June revenue was $10,999.07, the highest month yet in the quest for $10,000 a month in revenue, part time. Arguably I achieved the goal, however that is gross and net would be preferred.

All in all things are going well, the first month was September when the site launched on 9/4/07, which was a naked Word Press installation and much of September was spent tweaking the site, and this June (well before the 1 year deadline) the revenue was over $10,000.

There is still much to be done and not enough time, or at least that is how it always feels. RSS and Newsletter continue to grow nicely, and now MySpace was added to the mix. Exactly why I added it I am not sure, other than the fact that it could increase awareness of this site and I can create blog entries there as some may prefer to obtain my latest updates there as well. I do not expect any direct revenue from having and maintaining a MySpace page, but I could be wrong.

I always like to point out that the above not only applies to this site longest.com but also the other niche sites I operate such as VentureCapitalUpdate.com.

As I stated last month, I have found that when trying to maximize revenue through affiliate marketing and advertising the overall ranking of the site is not an indicator of revenue, which is probably obvious to most. More SEO is needed, I just have not had the time and May suffered for it.

RSS subscriptions have increased significantly from 152 to 791 to 1,971 this month and the newsletter subscriptions have increased from 3,707 to 6,578 to 11,049 this month. As I thought last month, I believe more people like to subscribe to newsletters than an RSS feed.

I always like to point out that the above not only applies to this site longest.com but also the other niche sites I operate such as VentureCapitalUpdate.com. Overall I am unhappy this month, as May was less than April. The decrease was not much in overall revenue but the profit was lower. June needs to jump.

April was an interesting month. Alexa rankings and website statistics changed and the site showed a better ranking. However I am focusing on better targeting my content more narrowly in search of quality traffic instead of mass traffic. I have found that when trying to maximize revenue through affiliate marketing and advertising the overall ranking of the site is not an indicator of revenue, which is probably obvious to most.

Therefore the ranking of the site as shown by Alexa, Quantcast or Compete, does not directly correlate with a sites revenue. I should either remove ranking or better yet I will probably just add other key metrics such as links in to the site from other sites, and metrics that better quantify the quality of the traffic and correlation of type of traffic to type of content. I am not entirely sure how to do that at this moment.

RSS subscriptions have increased significantly from 152 to 791 and the newsletter subscriptions have increased from 3,707 to 6,578. My rationale for this increase, and only a guess, is my focus on more targeted content is obtaining visitors interested in the content and therefore more likely to subscribe to the site RSS or the newsletter. Also, due to the faster growth in the newsletter I would conclude, another guess, that most visitors do not know what an RSS feed is and how to subscribe while everyone understands a newsletter. Just a guess, but it would explain the larger newsletter growth.

Looks like May is a month for obtaining more links in and working on site SEO, just like I said in April but did not put in as much time as I would have liked. Overall I am happy as the total revenue was over $6,000.

I have learned that for some reason in my case, and it may not be the case for everyone, the RSS subscriptions grow slowly but the newsletter subscriptions have grown from 852 in February to 3,707 in March. This helps revenue of affiliate sales substantially as the RSS feed typically only has a portion of the story or post while the newsletter has two interesting components. There is an automatic e-mail that you can set up (as many as you like) to be sent at set time intervals after the person subscribes - known as an auto-responder. Secondly, you can send an email newsletter at any time. Read more about the autoresponder.I just began to use the SEO Spyglass Tool along with the SEO Suite v8.0 to assist with my SEO when I have time. This has helped the page optimization, by simply making the best keyword choices for post titles and content for search engines. While it is beneficial, I hope to see a substantial increase in my site ranking after a couple months of SEO.

I increased spend dramatically on advertising this month and it translated into sales. The two categories of revenue above advertising and affiliate sales are going to be combined into one category for the following reason, I may run a network having advertisements that are affiliate sales and therefore they are one in the same. As an example, I may join an affiliate program and put ads on my site for them or I may run ads from an advertising network and an affiliate ad is run throughout that network. Either way the sale was an affiliate sale meaning some sort of a CPA (cost per acquisition) and I was not going to be paid unless the acquisition was fulfilled. You can fined a list of the Top Online Advertising Networks.To note this month, I added aweber and have grown a substantial newsletter list. It appears that the RSS subscriptions have not grown much but individuals are much more likely to join a newsletter list.The goal is still to create as much viral traffic as possible and I continue to use SEO Suite v8.0 to assist with my SEO when I have time. I also needed a second server this month, much more powerful and dedicated server.

Revenue has continued to increase, nothing dramatic however at least doubling each month. I did not put as much time into the site in January as I had in previous months so the increase in revenue shows what momentum can do for you.As I did spend on advertising I will put more time into trying to obtain more organic traffic by participating in relevant discussion groups and obtaining links back from relevant sites. While that takes longer to obtain more traffic it is worth a shot. I will also create more niche sites. A decent increase in revenue from advertising was seen at my Venture Capital Update site as I tested the Rubicon Project for optimizing code.

After reviewing the first two months results, below is a list of items I will focus on during December. The first week of January ‘08 we can review the results and determine if the efforts yielded any results. While some results may not be seen for months, it is worth starting.

• Tests, create and post more tests to assist in evaluating software and marketing programs.

Postings to Assist with Revenue

• Affiliate Programs, create more posts related to affiliate programs and reviews of their offerings to increase revenue.
• Optimize the affiliate articles (utilizing WordTracker and other tools to obtain better search engine placement.

I found that only a small percentage of the ad inventory was actually used.
