Power of Flash Banners

Why You Should Care About Flash
I thought I would post about flash banners with an example and discuss the “why you should care about flash“. Let us assume for a moment that you will be utilizing display advertising online. Let us also assume you have the proper networks, targeting, know what size banners generate the best click throughs for your audience, placement on the page, and you only have the option of paying on a CPM (cost per thousand) model.

Due to the CPM model, where you are paying for impressions, you must obtain the highest click through, and ultimately conversion rates, as you can. Many times flash banners can outperform static banners, and many times it can be substantially higher. Just going from .25% to 1% can take you from 2,500 click throughs to 10,00, and in some cases the increase in response can be even greater.

Types of Flash
You may be thinking that having something move, such as an image, is flash. However flash can be very interactive, here is an example of an interactive banner. This has a question that can be answered in the flash banner itself. Then the user is taken to the site.

In this case the flash banner is representative of the site itself and what the user will find. This will also increase the ultimate conversions.

Try Flash
For your next display campaign be sure to give flash a try. Most ad networks will accept flash as easily as they do a static banner. There are other types, other than flash, however not all are accepted easily and uniformly across most networks.

Hopefully this example will peak your creativity.

Mobile Analytics from AdMob

Mobile statistics and analytics are not easy to find. However AdMob’s monthly reports are excellent. Not only do the provide insight into the mobile advertising market but also into the mobile market and users behaviour.

Sample Size
Note that the report is put out by AdMob and based on data from their network. With that caveat in mind, their April reports states they now serve ads for more than 7,000 mobile Web sites and 1,600 applications around the world. That is an impressive sample size.

Free Reports
You cannot beat their free monthly reports. Great insight and information, the April report was 19 pages. You can go to AdMob here , or straight to their metrics page here

Mobile Metrics
They provide information such as:

  • Smartphone Market Share – such as iPhone with 43% of Mobile Web and App Usage
  • Ad Requests – by Country / Region
  • Handset Data – Worldwide and by particular countries
  • more…

AdMob is an excellent source of data for the mobile market, it’s worth subscribing to their blog and obtaining their monthly reports.

Wireless iPod Speakers

eos-wirelessWireless iPod Speakers are quite amazing and can save you wiring and more.

Wireless iPod Speakers
We used to suggest EOS but do not anymore. There are many others to provide wireless speakers and/or functionality. Using wireless speakers is a huge time saver, you can simply plug in your iPod. Then place the other speakers anywhere in your home/business and that’s it. You now have music throughout, without any wires to install. There is also no static, if you have tried wireless speakers before you know that can be the biggest issue.

WordPress Roles so You Can Let Others Do the Work

If you are like most you started using WordPress and you alone maintain the entire site, all the posts, everything. It would be great if others could help, possibly other authors that create similar content or maybe someone you pay for writing/editing.

You can allow others to register as a user of your site and provide them with access, varying levels of access. These are called the “roles” and consist of: Administrator, Editor, Author, Contributor, Subscriber. Here are their definitions:

  • Administrator – you will want to keep this to yourself, as this role allows access to all the administration features
  • Editor – This role allows the person to publish posts, which you may not want if you wish to edit them first, they can also manage other peoples posts
  • Author – This role allows someone to manage their own posts including publishing
  • Contributor – Much like an author they can manage their own posts but not publish, in case you wish to view someones work before they publish
  • Subscriber – A role to just comment, review comments and receive any newsletters you may send

  • Is Compete Pro for Site and Search Analytics Any Good?

Site traffic analysis sites, those that report your traffic to third parties, are commonly looked at to determine your site reach as well as for competitive intelligence. Most widely used are Comscore (paid only), Alexa (free), Quantcast (free), Compete (free and paid).

The question is why Compete Pro? What does it have to offer that Quantcast or Alexa do not provide? It appears that possibly their search analytics and referral analytics are the features not already provided for by Quantcast or Alexa.

It also appears that Compete Pro may be attempting to encroach on some of the products that Comscore provides for competitive intelligence.

Anyone have experience with Compete Pro (the paid version) and do you find it worth the subscription fees?

PictureSurf WordPress Plugin for an Outstanding Picture Gallery

    picturesurf
There are thousands of plugins out there for WordPress, I probably use 15 myself and am always looking for new helpful plugins. Many solve a problem, such as a plugin to keep a particular category from appearing in your RSS feed. This is a plugin that not only solves a problem, but provides an elegant and efficient solution for adding pictures to your posts.

Installing is a snap. Simply download from the site (PictureSurf), unzip, upload to your plugins directory, activate the plugin and you are done. You will not see it appear under settings in WordPress because it is added to each post you create.

You can click to add an image, click to add a title, description and tags. You can also customize the gallery title and add custom colors as well as fonts.

    Created by
The plugin was created by Alan Rutledge who in the past ran a mobile photo sharing startup out of his Berkeley dorm room on $800 out of pocket (much of which went to Zachary’s Pizza) before it was acquired by iLike in 2006. Previously he was at Microsoft and the startup incubator that pioneered Google’s advertising technology.

    In Action
I have added pictures of the PictureSurf site and plugin explanation below in the gallery using the plugin. Took all of 20 seconds, amazing.

    Benefits
There are many benefits of using this plugin, here are two: search engine optimization with the easy to use title, description, and tags, as well as a potential increase in page views as the images have unique pages for each of them.

    Investors Business Daily Online

I used to write technical analysis software, years ago, and spend all my time consuming anything I could related to stocks and commodities. Investors Business Daily (IBD) is the newspaper, in addition to Barrons, that I recall reading daily. My father got me involved and trained me to know what to look for, I will do that for my kids one day.

It has been years since I have actively day traded, however I took a look at their website and online tools and am amazed. Not only is their paper, in my opinion, the best source for traders of any kind, the website is outstanding. They also have tools available to subscribers for stocks, charting, analysis, and more.

You can get 4 weeks of Investors Business Daily free. Just follow that link.

Twitter for Companies and Brand Monitoring

Twitter gains in popularity constantly. The general service is that of following, being followed, shooting off public notes of 140 characters or less, as well as replies and direct messages. On top of that basic functionality many a tool has been built. Here is a long list of Twitter Tools.

The question is whether this is just a new type of chat tool to communicate with friends, a time killer, or something more. Everyone has their opinion which ranges from “you must tweet, and your company must tweet” to “complete waste of time and a huge interrupter which just lowers everyones overall daily efficiency”.

Here is my opinion, it is yet another channel of communications to manage and quite frankly whether I like the technology or not I approach it like anything else. If my customers and potential customers (and I use customers in a broad sense encompassing whatever your audience may be) are there then you should be there. If my customers (audience) were not there I would not be there.

These days there are many ways in which someone can use their time, however there is only so much time in a day. If Twitter is part of your audience’s time slice of each day then it may be worth your time.

That being said, where to start? Take a look at the Twitter Tools list I mention above, you will find that you can search past tweets for keywords and also monitor keywords in real time with Monitter and other tools. You can also use Twitter in a web browser or on a cell phone, or with one of many applications that sit on your desktop. This brings me to the latest tool I found to manage multiple accounts.

    Twitter for Companies
    splitweetlogo
This tool is name Splitweet. This is the first tool I have found to use and monitor multiple Twitter accounts, for example Twitter accounts for multiple companies or brands. Through this tool you will be able to tweet, reply and direct message through more than one account at a time without having to flip between browser windows or log in and log off. Take a look at their menu here:

    splitdashboard

Your dashboard shows tweets of those you are following, the replies, direct messages and favorites are all provided in a tabbed format. Also provided are your brand monitors. More below. Here is the most impressive feature and a picture below to explain.

    splitmultiple

The above shows two tweets that were on the dashboard (for privacy reasons I marked out certain aspects) and you will see a green square and a yellow square. When you use Splitweet you can log into multiple accounts. For this example I logged into two Twitter accounts. One account is represented by a yellow square and one by a green square. The tweet with both colored squares was made by an individual that was being followed by both accounts. You then have the option to reply or direct message in response to that tweet from either account.

All the tweets of those you are following are shown on the same screen and the color squares let you know which of your multiple accounts they are related to. The same method is used on the reply screen and direct message screen.

    Brand Monitoring
Another feature for companies is the constant watch for terms you have asked it to follow. You enter a search term and if anyone anywhere tweets publicly with your search terms you will see them listed on the dashboard as well as the Brand mentions tab.

    Conclusion
I am impressed by the feature set that Splitweet provdes for those that would like to monitor multiple accounts and their brands. A feature set needed for both small and large companies. While I would like to see it in an application and store information in an attached database, this application is a good start and worth a try, especially for free.

    Give Splitweet a try.

    Yammer is Twitter for Businesses

As Twitter gains in popularity many are starting to realize the communication benefits it can provide. Everything you twitter, unless it is a Direct Message, is instantly discoverable by everyone as it is public.

A site that debuted this year is Yammer which is essentially a business version of Twitter. I over simplify it as it has many useful administration functions.

Most importantly it is private, or at least limited to your company. To join you must have a company email address, and honestly it will work for any group of individuals with the same email address, such as @xyz.com.

There is a cost involved, but it is a nominal $1 per employee per month. When you sign up as the company administrator you have access to all the administration tools. The tools allow you to customize it, restrict access, delete members, remove messages, and more privileges.

Just like Twitter, there are applications to receive the messages on your iPhone, Blackberry, a desktop application, and of course in the browser.

Here is a quote from a company using Yammer.

“Yammer gives us the ability to communicate in real-time with our entire team in NY, LA, and San Francisco. We’re able to share more raw information, which has already increased our internal efficiency quite significantly. It’s been good for brainstorming as well; I can post a question and get immediate thoughts, ideas and feedback. Yammer makes information sharing fun.” – Frank Addante, Rubicon Project CEO

The instant communication can be incredibly useful, the ability to message a group within your company instantly and effortlessly, regardless of location is amazing.
