Homepage Redesign Done Right by GeniusRocket

Originally I wrote about the GeniusRocket service (Get Superbowl Quality Videos at Genius Rocket) as a great new service and place to get high quality videos, banners, logos and more by choosing from multiple submissions. You receive multiple submissions to choose from.

Today, I see their site has been redesigned. The first time I visited their site I was confused as to what they were offering. While their service has always been nothing short of amazing, their homepage did not convey why I was there or what they offered. We all know about landing pages and squeeze pages which typically have one purpose and that one page is focused on that one goal, a sale or registration etc. But what about a business with multiple product and service offerings, and what if it is also a new method of buying or simply a new business model that no one is familiar with? How in the world do you convey that on a homepage, very difficult. I should say, easy to articulate, difficult to actually create. So here is GeniusRocket as an example.

Unfortunately I do not have a screen shot of their original home page, however take a look at this new image, and more importantly the entire homepage of GeniusRocket here.

homepage_genius_rocket

Above is a screen shot, it is only a small portion but the area of the home page that grabs your attention. When you look at the homepage do not click into the site. Look to see if you can determine what they offer and why you would use them. Next look to see if they have the copy and links to answer your next question. I will not say what your next question would be after viewing the homepage, but I feel confident they have anticipated it.

Bookmark their site so you can revisit it once you need to redesign an homepage. In my opinion and excellent example.

I wrote a Profiting Online eBook and it is Free

I decided to write an eBook about Profiting Online. It took a while and is 40 pages, meant to be an easy read and instructional. Why an eBook and not just posts on a site? While blogs are a great tool to easily publish information, they typically list the posts and articles in order of the most recent to the oldest, which does not convey information in a step by step instructional method.

Making Money Online eBook
I wrote this book for many reasons. Online technology, websites, services, tools, social media tools, social media sites, however you want to categorize the latest site or service you have seen changes almost daily. It can seem overwhelming. However if you peel the layers off of any web product or service and look at the business model, how they make money, they are all very similar.

Whether you are starting from scratch and do not have your own site, or have an existing site and looking or new marketing methods or ways to make money online, I hope you find this very useful.

Download your copy for free here

Background
You will see from my background that I have been involved with online businesses in many ways, from starting my own online businesses to assisting others. I spend a lot of time merely analyzing business models and I have learned, as will you, that every business needs to make money, period. I have heard many tell me about the great “idea” that they have, many of which are amazing, however the bottom line is the answer to the question “how are you going to make money?”.

If you have ever walked through and viewed the paper copies of patents in the Patent & Trademark Office you will be amazed at what you see and many times wonder “why is that not being marketed or sold today?” and in many cases the answer is that there is either no demand or it cannot be made and sold for a profit. However, all of them are very cool and amazing, but if they cannot make money they will typically not see the light of day. Let’s discuss money making.

How Online Businesses Make Money
There are two ways to make money with online businesses, either make money as part of your business model or your model is to build an amazing technology and hope to sell it to another business that will either monetize it or provide it for free as a value added service. I will not be discussing the “I will build this cool thing and then sell it later” approach, which is valid but not for discussion here.

In many ways this book, these instructions and explanations, may seem simplified however I have chosen to touch on every aspect from start to finish with step by step instructions so anyone can set up a site, promote it, drive traffic to it and generate income.

The other approach I could of taken would have been to go in depth into one area, however I would prefer to get you started and then you may use many of the online sites to explore and learn more about any one particular topic in detail.

The book includes the following topics:

  • Types of Revenue
  • Money Making Online Now – the Best Programs
  • Setting up Your Site – How to Get Setup Quickly
  • Maintaing Your Site – What to Write About
  • Online Marketing – How to Obtain Visitors
  • Advertising and Free Traffic
  • Statistics – How are You Doing
  • Revenue and more….

Understanding Google AdWords and Google Analytics for Conversion Tracking and Business Intelligence

I find metrics and business intelligence to be extremely telling and cannot live without them. The ability to test, optimize, re-test and ultimately obtain the desired action of a user or customer at the best possible price is something only afforded to online advertising and marketing as long as you use the right tools.

I am sure you have heard of conversion tracking, and Google’s tools within AdWords and Analytics make it very easy. Here is my guide to setting up, finding the data, and understanding the differences between Google AdWords Conversions and Google Analytics Goals and Filters.

First Setup Google AdWords to talk to Google Analytics

Be sure to tie your Google AdWords account to your Google Analytics account. To do so you need to have the email that you use as your AdWords login the same as an email of a user of your Google Analytics. Once you have an email that is the same for both AdWords and Analytics you login to your Google Adwords account. On the top menu click the Analytics tab (see graphic below).

Google Analytics Tab Picture

The Analytics account will be listed as long as your Analytics has a user with the same email as your AdWords account. Follow the steps and you will then see your Analytics reports available via the “Analytics” tab within Google AdWords.

How to Setup Conversion Tracking within Google AdWords

To set up the conversion tracking within Google AdWords click on the “Conversion Tracking” submenu underneath the “Campaign Management” tab.

You then “Create a New Action” and you need to name it, such as “Registrations”, other data can be associated to it also. Once you save the action you will be given code to put on the page.

You copy the code and paste it into the page that the user will see after they take your desired action. For example if you have a registration page named “register.php” and it collects their name and email with a button to “register” and the next page once registered is “welcome.php” then you put the code on the “welcome.php” page.

Example of how the flow of data works with AdWords: an individual searches on your keyword within Google, the Google network, or Content Network (depending on how you set up your AdWords campaign) then they see one of your advertisements (you can create many different variations) and go to your landing page, submit the information to register with you, then the next page which has the Conversion Tracking code is presented to the user “Thanks for Registering” and the code pings Google AdWords to register a conversion.

You will now see which Campaign, AdGroup, Keyword and Advertisement within Google AdWords generated that conversion. Cost per conversion and other useful information is provided as well.

How to Setup Conversion Tracking within Google Analytics

To set up the conversion tracking with Google Analytics you create what they call “Goals”. To set up a goal you first look under the “Website Profiles” and next to your Domain you will see the “View Reports” and “Edit” under “Settings”.

Google Settings Picture

You will see under the “Conversion Goals and Funnel” heading a list of Goal Names, starting with sequential numbering of G1 G2 G3 etc. Click the “Edit” link under settings to set up a Goal.

Note: What is different about the Google Analytic Goal tracking code as opposed to Google AdWords Conversion Tracking is that you do not need to set up code on your pages for the Goal Tracking. However, you must have the generic Google Analytics code on all your pages for it to work.

There are a list of fields to fill out, the question marks provide information on what is needed. Two main items to understand, Goals and Funnels. Goals are set up by simply putting the URL of the page that as the Goal page. Every visit to that page will be counted so you need to be careful and assure that is a unique page that can only be accessed the way you want. For example if the Goal page is your home page because a new registrant is taken to the home page after registering you will not only have the total of new registrants but it will also show the total number of visits to the home page for that day. The total will be inflated. This is the major difference between the accuracy of the AdWords Conversion tracking and the Google Analytics Goal tracking. However, the Funnels, which are optional, assist in removing the inflated Goal counts.

To utilize Filters, which are incredibly helpful and powerful, you define the path you would like to see a person take. In other words your Goal may show 10 registrants, however you may want to know if they went to the Goal page by first going to the registration page as this would remove all the inflated visitors. For example, if the Goal shows 20 visits to the Goal page and only 10 came from the registration page then you know there were 10 registrants. Utilizing filters can be used for many purposes.

Here are two powerful uses of the Goals and Filters, for internal site development and optimization as well as external advertising campaign testing.

First, internally you can use the filters to show the paths that are taken to registration. Is it home page –> registration or content page –> registration, any path you may suspect or see within Analytics you can filter here.

Also, internally if you have a multi-page sign up process you can determine exactly which pages potential registrants drop off. You may have individuals drop off when you ask certain questions or on certain pages, great to be able to test.

Second, to monitor external advertising campaigns that use unique landing pages you create, you can show filtering from page1 –> registration or page2 –> registration etc. This is a great way to determine, in a process of pages, which campaigns work best.

Where to Find the AdWords Conversions within Google AdWords

You can also find the AdWords conversion data within AdWords. Total number of Conversions are listed by Campaign Name, by Ad Group Name within the Campaign, by Advertisement Variation and by Keywords. The data will always be listed under the “Conversions” column.

Where to Find the AdWords Conversions and Goals within Google Analytics

Before we discuss how to use the Goal and Conversions, here is where you find the data with Google Analytics. The image on the left shows the data for AdWords is found under the “Traffic Sources” menu item. While the image on the right shows the Goals information is shown under the “Goals” tab, a lot of great information.

Now You’re Ready!
That’s it, now you are up and running and know the differences between the Google Conversion tracking with AdWords and the Google Analytics Goals and Funnels. The above is meant to get you started, however does not even begin to touch on the various ways in which you can use the data. Begin to use the tools, use your imagination and you will be wondering why you never used them before.

Ad: I always recommend, before you spend too much time on your site, get your own domain or all that work will be for nothing, get a domain name with a huge discount using our GoDaddy coupon for domains and more as well as godaddy hosting information.

Home Loan Site is a Good Example of Niche Content

As an example of a site in a niche area, here is one related to home loans. The site is getsmart and they focus on mortgage and refinance information and offers.

Their design is simple and easy to navigate, very straight forward and allows you to get to the content you want. They provide articles as well as a tool to assist their visitors with obtaining mortgage and refinance information and consequently offers.

As we have discussed in previous articles, when attempting to create a site that will rank well in search engines for key words it makes sense to provide a valuable site with not just offers but useful information that others will want to link to.

The main value of the GetSmart home loans site provides a home loan and refinance comparison tool so a visitor can obtain the best possible loan for their situation. When wanting to learn more check out their articles on refinance loans, cash out loans, home improvement loans and more.

Individuals looking for a home loan will certainly want to bookmark this site and may even share it with others. Repeat visitors and word of mouth which is the ultimate goal, and by providing a good service as getsmart does, will certainly achieve that goal. A result is a happy customer and affiliate fees for a job well done.

Step 4 Submit Your Site to Directories and Search Engines

Before someone can find your site in a search engine or directory you need to be listed in the search engines. Once you are listed you also want your new content to listed as well, as soon as you update it. However here is the difference between a directory and a search engine, a simplistic explanation:

Search engines

Search engines are able to catalog more than just your home page. A search engine, such as Google can keep track of all your webpages. However you need to be sure they know when you add new pages to your site, this can happen many ways. You can submit each individual page to a search engine, you can hope that the search engine finds your new page when it is linked from another page, or you can create a sitemap and let Google and others know the URL of the sitemap. A sitemap lists all the pages of you site, the search engine can parse the sitemap and find links to all your pages as well as other relevant information. More about sitemaps in another post. However, before any of your pages can be found you must have at least one page submitted. While most allow you to perform this task manually, there are hundreds of search engines to be listed on and using a submission service can save you time and also guarantee you are listed. Most search engines are free and some do not let you submit directly as they receive their search results from another search engine and display as their own.

Directories
Directories typically only list one URL, usually the top level or home page such as http://www.longest.com or http://www.longest.com/index.html as opposed to a deep linked page such as http://www.longest.com/2008/02/05/in-text-advertising/. Some directories are paid submission, such as Yahoo! where you must pay to be listed, at least in their directory. There are some directories that other engines receive initial links from as well.

Therefore the plan is to:
1. have your home page submitted and listed in search engines and directories;
2. be sure the search engines have the most efficient way to know when you have updated a page or added a new page, and
3. be sure to update your listings if the search engine or directory require you to do so.

This post will address number 1 above to be sure you are submitted, then following up and tracking your progress will be discussed and explained in another post. Number 2 and 3 can be solved by a variety of methods such as providing an XML site map, more in another post.

Note that while some search engines such as Google drive the majority of the search traffic, a benefit in being listed in multiple places is having links back to your site. Links to your site help with search engine rankings, more in another post.

While you can use software to submit to directories and search engines, or submit one directory and search engine at a time. Here are various packages that can get you started and save you valuable time.

Step 3 Sign up for Revenue and Traffic

Once you have your site hosting, domain name, and your site setup it is time to start joining affiliate programs. Two that are easy to use and good for generating revenue and providing advertising as well as links into your site are below.

Generate Revenue

The first revenue generating program is AdBrite. By placing code on your pages advertisements are placed where you place the code. You are paid when these advertisements are clicked on by visitors. Before an advertisement appears the page is automatically reviewed and a relevant advertisement is placed. If the content is related to cars an advertisement for cars may appear. This contextual advertisement is used to increase the chances that an advertisement is clicked more often, the click-thru rate. The higher the click-thru rate the more revenue you will make.

The second revenue generating program is Text Link Ads, you simply place the code on your page and they sell the ad space for you. Once you have a decent amount of web traffic this can be a quick easy way to $100 a month or more.

Sign up for Text Link Ads here, it is free to join.

Step 2 Setup the Site

Once you have your site hosting and domain name you need to setup wordpress by downloading it, then uploading it to your site and installing.

First – Download WordPress

First you will download the free WordPress code and save it on your computer desktop.

Go to the WordPress site here and click to download the .zip file.

Second – Install Yourself or Obtain Help

To install yourself you will need to first get a file transfer program in order to transfer the files to your webhost you will need a file transfer program (called an FTP program).

I use CyberDuck for the mac – Cyberduck is found here or FileZilla for Windows – FileZilla is found here.

To have the site setup for you, I recommend you use a freelance site to have it installed for you. You simply post a request such as “install wordpress”, receive bids, choose one, escrow payment and release payment once your site has been successfully installed.

I recommend Scriptlance here or oDesk here, if you want someone else to install.

If you decided to host at HostMonster they will send you the FTP information to enter into the FTP program. Here are the steps to install.

Third – Copy WordPress Files

After you have downloaded and installed one of the above ftp programs you will enter in the host name, which is your domain name such as longest.com , your User name and Password which are supplied by HostMonster. See the image below.

ftp program
Click the Connect button and you will be connected to the server. Next you will see the screen below.

ftp program view
The left side will show the files on your desktop computer and the right side will show the files on your server. You will navigate on the right side to the /httpdocs/ directory. On the left hand side you will find the WordPress files after you unzipped the file you downloaded. This image shows all the file and directory names.

wpinstall_3.jpg

You then highlight the files on the left and drag and drop them on the right. You will see the status in the bottom frame of the program while the files are uploaded.

Fourth – Create Database

Login to your HostMonster account and choose the database icon to create a database, user name and then associate the user name with the database. Once logged in click this icon wpinstall_create_db_1.jpg

Next you will create a database name, pick any name you like, see below:

wpinstall_create_db_2.jpg
Next you create a user name, pick any name you like, then use the drop down under User to choose the user name you just created and use the drop down under Database to choose the database you just created. See screenshot below.

wpinstall_create_db_3.jpg
Now there is only one remaining step.

Fifth – Modify One File and Done

Next you open up the file named wp-config-sample.php, but you will need to rename it to wp-config.php when done. There are instructions included with the WordPress download – the readme file. So either read that file or simply add the database name, user name and password you just created above in the wp-config file and re-upload using the ftp program. Next go to your domain name and include /wp-admin/install.php, for example http://www.domain.com/wp-admin/install.php. You will be asked for a title for the blog, your email and then receive a login and password. That is it, you are up and running!

Step 1 Get a Website and Domain

The first step is to set up your site and ideally obtain your own domain name.

You can easily start a blog for free at the wordpress hosted site, however I recommend you get your own domain and host wordpress (see below).

First – Get a Domain

Obtain your own domain name and use keywords that are related to your sites content (theNewCarReviews.com , theListofBestRecipes.com etc.). GoDaddy has a great tool that suggests domains for you if the domain you search for is taken.

Get your domain from GoDaddy and use the GoDaddy Coupon here.

Once you visit GoDaddy you will need to search on potential domain names. The first page of the GoDaddy is very busy so take a look at the search box in the upper left and start by typing in your first idea for a domain name. You will see this search box:

godaddy domain search.

Do not become discouraged as finding a domain name is difficult. You will see that GoDaddy has provided a tool to suggest names that they believe are similar to the name you are looking for. Once you find a domain name that is not already registered you will see a screen with a check mark such as this one:
domain not taken

Once you have found a domain name that is not yet taken you can proceed to checkout and obtain your domain name, scroll down the page and find the checkout button which looks like this:
godaddy checkout

The process of checking out will prompt you to create an account name and password. Start a spreadsheet or write down your login names and passwords as you will be creating many for various sites.

Second – Get Hosting

Now that you have your domain you need a place to host your own blog and install wordpress. This site is hosted at HostMonster and uses WordPresss.

Here are 3 hosting companies:
(1) Get your HostMonster Account. Click here to Get HostMonster for only $6.95 a month * Recommended

(2) FREE Domain with Web Hosting Purchase Web Hosting as low as $9.95 a month here

(3) Ultra Hosting as low as $5.95 a month and they always have specials

On the homepage you will see a “Sign Up Now” button, and on the next page you will be able to enter the domain name you just purchased under the “Transfer Clients” title as you have a domain now:

hosting account
Once you have completed the process check your email for your welcome from HostMonster. They will send a login for your account with them and an IP address as well as FTP login information, more about FTP and setup in Article 2. You will also receive a login to your control panel through the HostMonster home page on the upper right.

hostmonster login
Once you login to your account you will see a screen with a link to the “cPanel Hosting” with the “Click Here” link:
cpanel hostmonster
Once you are in the control panel there are many valuable tools such as the web statistics named “Webalizer”, see the screen shot below. A future article will explain how to setup Google Analytics which is an excellent free website statistics tool:

webalizer
Congratulations, you now have your own domain name and hosting account. Now for step 3 you will point the domain with GoDaddy to the hosting account at HostMonster.com.

Third – Point Domain to Hosting Account

Go to GoDaddy and login with your login name and password. On the right hand side you will see the word Domains, place your mouse over it and a drop down menu will appear, choose My Domains.

godaddy domains
Next you will see your domain hyperlinked, click on your domain and then click on the Nameservers image godaddy nameservers. You will then see the field for Nameserver 1 and replace the existing information with nameservers in the HostMonster welcome email, which is probably NS1.HOSTMONSTER.COM, and replace Nameserver 2 with NS2.HOSTMONSTER.COM, hit the orange OK button and you are done. It will take at least a couple of hours, and maybe a day, for the domain to point to your hosting account. You now have your domain, your hosting account, and have pointed the domain to your web space. Congrats.
