We can become overwhelmed by the choices of available apps for our phones and computers. Not all apps are for every individual, and not all apps are created equal. But whatever our need we can be sure there is an app out there that will fill that need. These apps can make our lives much easier.
For those of us that have an online business, or have set them up, we all know that it is a rarity to find a platform to do everything we want. How many times have you compared multiple e-commerce platforms and looked at their features side by side. Often you find each has components you want but none of them ever have everything you need. Or you know in the back of your mind that in a month or two you will need a modification or additional functionality and the platform probably will not have it. If only adding features to your online store was as easy as adding an app to your phone. It is with Shopify apps.
Setting up an e-commerce store is much easier than it used to be. No longer do you have to obtain server hosting, choose the proper software, install and tailor to your needs. Ugh. Now you can pick one of many platforms, use a theme of theirs, simply register a domain from them or point your own and you are done. Now as I allude to above, what if it does not have the features you want to add? You may be familiar with plugins for WordPress which are the encapsulated software that you can simply add to a WordPress installation. Shopify calls them apps, much like an app for your phone.
Building your initial website is pretty much a no-brainer these days, thanks to these platforms. Now with apps you can also extend the functionality as well. They have an entire app store and within your Shopify account you can simply click to install any Shopify app you choose. Some are free, some have free versions, others require additional monthly fees or a one time fee, however they can assist and add features that would be very costly to build or pay someone to build.

- Social Media
- Customer Service
- Sales Channels
Here are some examples.
Chatting with Customers or Potential Customers
In the past you would have to browse the web to find a chat program. Next you would have to figure out how to install the code on your website. There are multiple chat programs available on the Shopify App Store. I have used many, and currently use Olark chat which has features such as watching who is shopping, chat from anywhere (even your cell phone), have multiple operators, and completely customize the chat interaction. Regardless of which chat program you may want, the point is that you chose one, click to install and you are done. With a Shopify app you now have chat available on your site. It is that easy.
Offer Items for Sale on eBay
To sell on eBay you probably know that you will need to setup an account and begin listing products within eBay. Once you have a sale you ship like any other order. Now you are checking your online store daily for orders and eBay daily for orders. You list products on your store and you list products on eBay. You get the idea, double the work. With apps such as inkFrog you click to install to your Shopify store and it’s installed. Once you configure the app once you are done. Now when you add a new product to your Shopify store it is listed on eBay as well, all done for you. The orders appear with your Shopify orders and you can manage all your typical eBay correspondence as well. With one simple app you are now listed on eBay for all your current and future products.
The above are just two examples of hundreds of apps you can add to your Shopify store. The point is that with Apps you can add features and functionality quickly and easily. Shopify allows any company to add their service by creating a Shopify app and this is how they have grown so fast.
