Don’t Put All Your Eggs in one BlogLog

This is a reminder that you need to be careful of relying on any one service for anything. That particularly applies to internet services. Not only can internet companies, sites and services be spun up quickly, they can also be terminated in a heart beat. How many times have we seen a service shut down with just a screen explaining they can no longer continue. This is slightly different as the service provided by Yahoo! named MyBlogLog sent out an email to members in March I believe, and also in April, and the site has this notice as you can see below.

mybloglog is now closed

You may have been relying on MyBlogLog for many blog related services and thought that it is provided by Yahoo! so not to worry. However even the big companies turn off services. So regardless of what services and companies you may rely on for your web experience or online business, be sure not to put all your eggs in one basket and diversify service providers.

Angies List Review

I have been using Angies List for a while now and thought I would write an Angies List Review. The value of the service is the fact that users review the service providers, contractors. It is those like myself and all the others that provide the content and the value for each other. This is typically the definition of social media. However in this case instead of a video of someone running their car into a wall I have found that social media in this instance is quite useful, as in others. Angie’s List is invaluable to me when I am looking to find service providers that provide the service I need and have good reviews.

 Angie's List review

How Angies List Works

To use the service you pay a fee, it can be monthly or yearly. In my opinion the fee is worth it and I will explain why later. You search for the type of service you need, such as garage door repair, and find those in your area. The service providers can be sorted in a variety of ways. You will see the providers name, contact information, number of reviews and the average grade. If you click into one of the search results you can read all of the reviews. The grade is A through F and given by those that provide the reviews.

How I used Angie’s List

I have used service providers I found through Angie’s list on three occasions. One was for a plumber, one for a garage door repair company and one to install a fence. First I searched for the type of provider I needed and I looked at those with the most reviews as well as the highest grades. Two companies may have an initial average grade of A but one may have 100 reviews averaged and one may just have 1. That does not mean those without reviews are not good, they just have not had as many reviewers post. Next you can click and learn more about each provider. Within each providers listing is information about them, including a link to their external website if they have one. Next you can read reviews about them and contact them.

I liked the ability to read the reviews, it is akin to speaking with a neighbor who used a particular service provider. It is good to read the top reviews, such as those with an A or a B rating, but I preferred to read the C, D and F ratings. [ See the image to the right ] I found that some of the poor ratings users provided were relevant and some were not. You need to read them to understand if they should effect your decision process. In the case of having a fence built I did not mind a D review when someone wrote they were a day late to install the fence. However I would mind a D review of a provider if the fence was falling down as they did not set the posts properly. Providers also have the ability to respond to reviews if they wish to dispute the issue. This feature of Angies list is the one I like the most, it would be particularly useful if you just moved into an area and do not know anyone to obtain referrals from.

Contact Providers
Angie’s makes it very easy to contact providers. You can email them through Angie’s list, or call them. All those I have contacted through the site have contacted me immediately. I had a garage repair company contact me within 10 minutes of sending an email and they were at my house within an hour to fix the problem.

Discounts and Coupons
You will also find that some of the providers provide coupons for contacting them through Angies list. I noticed a couple would.

Write a Review When Work is Done
Once you have the work done I recommend you review the provider within Angies. It is the reviews that allows everyone on the site to find the best providers they can.

Added Benefit for Forgetful People Like Me
Angies keeps the reviews you wrote so you can read them in the future. You will also know who you had perform work and their contact information, years later you can find out which plumber you used, as an example, whether you were happy with their work and call them again.

Is Angies Subscription Cost Worth It?
In my opinion the answer is yes. The main reason is that each review submitted by users, such as myself, is checked by their staff. You do not find any irrelevant reviews or junk responses as you may find on un-moderated sites. Theoretically you will not find any service providers trying to scam the system to move themselves up in ratings. The value is there.

Angies List Review Conclusion

I need to first disclaim that we run advertisements for Angie’s list. As a user of Angie’s list I highly recommend their service.

Michael Jordan and Entrepreneurs

I likes quotes for some reason, particularly from successful people regardless of their industry. Maybe it’s because the individual with the quote has put thought into the quote and it encapsulates a belief or rule they operate by. This particular quote from Michael Jordan applies very well to entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs are not afraid to fail and also get back up every time. Here is how Michael put it into words. Motivation for anyone and particularly entrepreneurs.

“I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot, and I missed. And I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is precisely why I succeed.”
— Michael Jordan

Amazon Virtual Private Cloud

You have heard alot about Clouds, now Amazon has what they call their Virtual Private Cloud. You can obtain a private piece of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud. It is a virtual network you define. You can have all the benefits of the latest cloud technology and let someone else, Amazon, deal with the technology of keeping it running. The benefit is that you can have the same type of network you would run in your own data center. Using the VPC you can leverage the AWS cloud as an extension of your corporate data center, as just one of many options.

Everyone is Beatable as MySpace Loses Members

Just because your business is number one today does not mean it will be in the future. There is always someone gunning for the top spot. Take for example the latest news about MySpace. I have seen multiple articles about MySpace losing 10 million users. Most are quoting a comScore report that states there were 10 million less unique users in February (63 million) than in January (73 million). Let’s make a distinction between registered users and visitors. It seems some articles are making it sound as if they lost 10 million registered users, in other words those that had joined decided to close their account. What the comScore report shows is that 10 million less people visited the site in February than in January. I am not saying it is not significant, just clarifying. It is very significant.

myspaceI saw that last year in one month MySpace had attracted 95 million unique users. That is quite a difference between 95 million and 63 million. During this time Facebook has continued to grow. This just shows that you cannot become complacent, others are always gunning for you. Just because you are number one today does not mean you will be tomorrow, staying ahead of the curve is paramount.

Auto Detect Visitors Devices

There are so many devices these days you have to be careful not to have your desire to provide the best experience for all users backfire. An article by google about Android user-agent information pointed out an interesting difference between mobile users and tablet users. Why does this matter to you? If you, as a marketer, or someone with a site needs to assure your users have the best possible experience you need to understand how those dealing with your site operations handle different devices. You may wish to provide a different site experience depending on whether the visitor is using a full size browser on a computer, using their mobile phone (and which kind) and also tablets.

androidWhat google points out is that by looking for the user agent “android” does not necessarily mean the visitor is using a mobile phone as they may be using a tablet. In this case it is possible you will want to provide a mobile optimized site to those with android on a phone and a full browser experience to those using android on a tablet which has a much larger screen. Read the full google article above for specifics on how to do this, and/or send it to your tech team.
