eMarketer Ad Spending Estimate
Geoff Ramsey, CEO of eMarketer told the Wall Street Journal “It’s something we’ve seen coming for a long time, but this is a tipping point,”. What Mr. Ramsey is referring to is their report that estimates 2010 will be the first time more money was spent in online advertising than in newspapers. You can read more of eMarketer’s articles and purchase their reports at eMarketer. This is significant for anyone that has an online business, particularly content.
Content Online
Two things to note, actually many more, but two obvious observations. First, this is good for those of you in the online marketing space and particularly those that have online content sites that have the same feel as newspapers. As the individuals that have traditionally spent money with newspapers move online they will have less of a transition when buying ads on sites that feel like newspapers. However that is only during the transition and as they understand online marketing better they may move to other sites and/or ad networks. Secondly, realize that this does not mean a flood of dollars are leaving X and going to Y, in other words those newspapers are going to move online if they have not already and with devices such as iPads, and others, many will be competing directly online was the same look and feel as they always had.

Publisher Technology
As a publisher you want to make the most money for your inventory. A publisher is someone who has advertising inventory in the form of text ads on a site, banners, video ads, audio ads or any type of advertising. Banners and text advertising have been around since the 90s and multiple advertising networks have provided inventory fulfilling technologies.
Systems have been developed by third party companies to optimize the fulfilling of inventory for the best return for advertisers as well as publishers. In the past you would manually swap out code on your site to deliver ads from those paying you the most for that inventory. Now it can be done for you with ad optimizing technologies.
Thirteen predictions from CEO’s of these top publisher technologies can be found here from the AdExchanger site. Learn the predictions for 2011 at their site, I will not steal their thunder here.
You will notice many reference RTB which stands for real-time bidding. The basic idea is to help both advertisers find the best audience at any time as well as obtain the highest eCPM for publishers. The eCPM is an estimated cost per thousand as not all payouts are based on fixed prices, therefore when a CPC (cost per click) is utilized the CPM must be estimated over time. To learn even more about Real Time Bidding see the white paper found here at the PubMatic site.

Top 10 Ecommerce Days
The numbers are in Millions, starting with 1 Billion on November 29, 2010. Unbelievable. Six of the top ten days are in 2010. This is as of the writing of this article December 14, 2010 and the year is not over yet.
Number 10 was Monday, Dec. 10, 2007 (Green Monday) with $881 MM. This dropped off the list on Monday December 13th, 2010. Ironically the day that pushed it off the list was another Green Monday which made the number 2 spot with $954 Million. Online ecommerce is through the roof.
1. Monday, Nov. 29, 2010 (Cyber Monday) $1,028 MM
2. Monday, Dec. 13, 2010 (Green Monday) $954 MM
3. Monday, Dec. 6, 2010 $943 MM
4. Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009 $913 MM
5. Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010 $911 MM
6. Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010 $901 MM
7. Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010 $898 MM
8. Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2008 $887 MM
9. Monday, Nov. 30, 2009 (Cyber Monday) $887 MM
10. Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009 $886 MM
Seems Impossible
In just 40 days, the first 40 of November and December 2010 alone, there was over $22 Billion spent online. This is according to Comscore and is up 12% from the prior year. Also, five of the top 10 spending days online have been this year and the year is not over yet. More detail is found at the comScore Press Release.
That figure was 16% higher than the previous year. Incredible.
Privacy Self Regulation
Having been in online advertising since it’s infancy I have seen and dealt with online privacy issues. At one time we built a banner ad server as well as a permission based email platform in the 90′s. Also as an intellectual property attorney I have dealt with the legal issues surrounding privacy and privacy policies. This has always been a fascinating issue. In many cases the government allows an industry to either regulate itself or else they will step in and regulate it for you.
The U.S. government, through the Federal Trade Commission, has been calling for more stringent regulation of online behavioral advertising practices. A group of associations put forth a self regulatory program in 2009. The associations are: American Association of Advertising Agencies (4A’s), American Advertising Federation (AAF), Association of National Advertisers (ANA), Direct Marketing Association (DMA), and the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), with support from the Council of Better Business Bureaus (BBB).
There is a webinar being put on by the DMA which you an find here, to learn more.
DNS Web Service
Many people utilize the Amazon Web Services and now they have added a highly available and scalable Domain Name System named Amazon Route 53. Here is a quote from their release about the system.
Route 53 effectively connects user requests to infrastructure running in Amazon Web Services (AWS) — such as an Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instance, an Amazon Elastic Load Balancer, or an Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) bucket — and can also be used to route users to infrastructure outside of AWS.
They have an easy-to-use self service API. You pay $1.00 per month and 50 cents per million queries for the first billion then 25 cents above that.
Over $1 Billion in One Day
I was amazed at the online black Friday number of over $648 Million in sales on November 25th, 2010 and now on November 29th there was over $1 Billion sales. Just as Friday is known as Black Friday, Monday is known as Cyber Monday. Both days are incredible. More detail is found at the comScore Press Release.
That figure was 16% higher than the previous year. Incredible.
