Microsoft AdCenter and Yahoo Search go Bing

Search Marketing with Microsoft and Yahoo
If you have been search marketing on both Bing and Yahoo you will soon, according to Microsoft, be using the Microsoft Advertising adCenter to manage your campaigns on both Yahoo! Search and Bing. If you only use Yahoo Search then you will need to brush up on a few differences with the adCenter interface.

Migration to Microsoft adCenter
Here are a few of the reminders from Microsoft:

• adCenter allows you to bid separately for singular/plural variations and common misspellings of keywords, giving you more granular control over your ROI.
• There are three match types in adCenter: exact, phrase, and broad match. When you transition your Yahoo! campaigns to adCenter, advanced match keywords will be set to broad match, and standard match keywords will be set to exact match.
• You can specify unique bids for each match type, to align bids to match type performance. For example, you can bid more for exact match keywords for your core products and services, to help you reach highly qualified potential customers.
• As more and more Yahoo! advertisers begin using adCenter, you may see an increase in the number of advertisers bidding on your keywords, which could affect your ad’s position.
• If your ad’s position has gone down due to increased competition, consider adjusting your bids and setting incremental bids as needed to help meet your objectives.

My favorite reminder is the last one that basically says “spend more money with us” haha.

Migration Over Time
They mentioned the full transition will be in October, late October. So be sure to log into both accounts constantly until you are sure Yahoo Search is turned off. They also have a webinar on Wednesday, September 29, at 11 am Pacific Time, where Yahoo! and Microsoft experts will walk you through the transition tool.

Angies List Case Study for Entrepreneurs

Inspiring Company Story
Angies List is a company you have probably heard of. They provide a subscription based service to find contractors and health care providers which have been individually reviewed by those that have used their services. By the looks of their site and after using their service you will realize it is incredibly well thought out and simple to use. Obviously a subscription service with users can generate significant revenue. However, realize they did not start day one like this. The company was founded in 1995 by Angie Hicks and Bill Oesterle. I wrote up a page about their story and background here. I also focused this podcast on the story as well.

angies listInspiring Story
I like to discuss companies that have inspiring stories for entrepreneurs. Two individuals started Angie’s list and pounded the pavement door-to-door to obtain reviews and populate their site. Fast forward over 10 years later and they have a thriving well known service. When you see successful companies do not think you cannot do it also, look back at their beginnings and realize that usually they start with one or more people with the drive to do whatever it takes in order to make it successful. comScore Search Engine Rankings August 2010

Search Rankings
The following are August search results. Ask surprised me. I did not realize how much market share they had. Ask is known as Ask Network and they had 3.8% of explicit core searches. Google had 65.4% market share, Yahoo! Sites had 17.4%, Microsoft sites had 11.1%, and AOL LLC had 2.3%. Obviously everyone talks about Google being the largest, however I posted these results to point out that they are only 2/3′s of the market.

Comscore defines an Explicit Core Search as such:

*“Explicit Core Search” excludes contextually driven searches that do not
reflect specific user intent to interact with the search results.

Let the Social Community Work for You

Social Community Does the Work for You
A while ago websites created their own content, much like a magazine would create their own content. The only user, or community, generated content came from letters sent to the editor and usually occupied a page or two of the magazine. Websites began with content created by the website editors. Fast forward to present day and instead of only 1 or 2% of the content coming from the audience it is in some cases 100% or close to it. Take a look at Squidoo, the majority of the content is from the audience or community. Provide them with the best tools and ability to openly communicate with you and others in the community and your site / service will thrive.

Create the Right Environment and Your Community Will Thrive
In the past, since the days of Bulletin Board Systems, forums were the typical community interaction. Usually a thread between users on various topics. These days communities are allowing users to register with their site, create a profile, and integrate discussions into the sites. Providing easy communication among members can often assist with spurring creativity from the community. Here is a great example of a site OutSpark that has done that and more. OutSpark provides MMORPG games.

OutSpark Community
Not only can players interact within the games that OutSpark provides but also on the site outside of the game. Each game has it’s own community area and encourages interaction, you can join as a user and begin communicating with others. Here is a thread where a community member created a magazine about the game Fiesta.

Success from OutSpark
Obviously OutSpark has been successful in marketing to their audience and providing the right environment for their community members to thrive as evidenced by the magazine created for members by members.

Billions of Internet and Mobile Users Not in the United States

Huge Opportunity Elsewhere
A friend of mine posted a link to this article at the Economist in which a study by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) predicts that by 2015 there will be 1.2 billion internet users in Brazil, Russia, India, China and Indonesia. Many more than the U.S. They call these the BRICI countries, which is very creative acronym. The article focused mainly on the mobile internet.

Mobile Internet
In India the article points out that while 81m use the internet over 507m have mobile phones, a distinction is that not every mobile phone user uses the internet. Over 20m new subscribers are being signed up a month by two large providers in India. Wow. Read the Economist article as this is and will continue to be a huge market and opportunity.

Eastbay Case Study for Entrepreneurs

Inspiring Stories
Eastbay is a company with an inspiring story for any entrepreneur. They sell shoes and sports apparel. Many times we hear about the ultimate success of a company but never the humble beginnings. I also focused this podcast on the story as well.

.ORG Domain Registrations
I have heard that .ORG domain registrations are restricted to non-commercial entities. That is not true. Anyone can register a .ORG domain. It is derived from the word organization (there is my first obvious fact of this post – you are welcome) There was an original set of domains established which included: .org .net .com .edu .gov .mil. You can read all about the .org background on Wikipedia.

.NET Domain Registrations
The .NET domains have a similar history as the .ORGs, you can read all about the .org background on Wikipedia. There are no restrictions on it’s registration either. The .NET was derived from the term Network (Thought I would insult your intelligence a second time – again you’re welcome).
