Link Google AdSense to Google Analytics

Why Link the Accounts?
If you use Google Analytics for your website statistics and place Google AdSense advertisements you can link the two accounts. But why would you care? By linking the accounts you are provided with information on which pages are generating adsense revenue. After analyzing the information you can better optimize your site, your pages, and the adsense code itself (type of ads, colors, font etc.) to increase the adsense revenue from your site. Simply placing adsense code is not enough to maximize your revenue, you need to optimize to increase your revenue per page and ultimately per site.

Linking Google AdSense with Analytics
Within AdSense on the main page, after you login, you will find a link to connect the two accounts. If you already have Google Analytics you can choose that option, or if you do not it will allow you to create an account. If you do have an account the next screen will show you all the sites you have in your analytics account. You simply check which ones you wish to link and you are done. However, it will only work if your login email address for AdSense is the same as your login email address for Analytics. If they are different, then read on to connect the accounts.

What If You Login With Different Emails?
This is why I wrote this article. It is a little confusing if your logins for AdSense and Analytics are different. But here is the fix. You login to your analytics account and at the top you choose the link that reads Analytics Settings, then at the bottom of the page you choose to Add a User. Now when you add a user you have to add the email address that you use to login to your AdSense account and you MUST make them an Account Administrator.

Once you have set up that new user in Analytics, return to your AdSense Account. Now click the link again on the main page to link AdSense with Analytics. This time when you choose the option that states you already have an analytics account it will take you to the next page where you choose which site profiles you want to link. It now works because you created an administrator user on your Analytics account that matches the user login on your AdSense account.

That is it, now after a few hours once the two are linked by Google you can begin to analyze your account.

Helpdesk and Contact Email Autoresponders Done Wrong

This holiday season has been one of the most interesting when it comes to retailer email. I have received more email in the past 30 days before Christmas than any prior year. I have also ordered all of my holiday presents online and therefore had some questions and issues with products I bought or was about to buy. I had two interesting experiences this past week, one with a question I emailed and one with a help desk issue. Both companies appear to be using either auto-responders or canned answers and it is damaging their reputation.

Here is the Big Problem
The problem with using an auto-responder with the same answer to every question or canned answers that do not answer the question, or even come close, is that it completely defeats the purpose. The reason you or any company uses such a system is to decrease your overall operating costs of dealing with inquires. However you do not want to do that at the expense of having an upset, unhappy customer. Now you have not fixed the problem, made the customer mad, and they have to call to get the right answer. This is not what the system is intended to do so use it properly. Here are my two examples.

dish_networkExample 1 : Question to Dish Network
I could not find the information on the Dish site about their connectivity, nor in their FAQs so I followed their contact us link. There were two options, one to call or one to email. It was after hours so I emailed. My question was whether or not a particular receiver had an HDMI port. I was very clear in my question so I could receive a simple yes or no answer. What I got in return was a canned response that did not answer my question at all and simply said “thanks for the email call us at this number”. If you are going to send that out to all the emails you get please do not provide an email address. That is horrible use of an automated system.

flip_videoExample 2 : Question to Flip Video
This was much more frustrating than the Dish issue. I received my Flip Video and took some video. Then when I plugged it into my Mac (I also tried a Windows and a Linux machined) the Flip was not recognized, could not see it as a drive and therefore could not get the video off.

So I opened a help desk ticket.

First Correspondance
Having dealt with many help desk systems I know that their knee jerk reaction is to respond with questions such as: what model number, what serial number, what color is it, is raining outside, etc., the questions they (not Flip per say but anyone you contact via email) always first ask in order to not answer your question and push it off onto you. So I took the time to send all that info, the model number, the software version, a screen shot and I explained I also updated the software to their latest etc. I was actually painfully clear because I really wanted to avoid that first knee jerk reaction. No dice ! – they sent it anyway, they sent the canned email asking all those questions.

Second Correspondance
I politely let them know that I already answered all the questions as can be seen in the thread. However I went ahead and answered them again one by one. They knew I already updated the software, which was stated in my first email. Their response was a canned response telling me to update the software. I did it anyway and have replied again. I have not yet gotten the next canned answer.

Conclusion
Customer service is obviously important, but the real issue here is that someone recommended these systems to two companies and neither of them are using them properly. Dish decided to make their email completely useless, might as well remove it. Flip decided to not even read the customer inquires and just click and send canned answers. I like automation, I like saving in operating costs, I love increasing profits, but please use the systems properly and do not alienate your customers.

Technology Guides

Here is a non-business related but a helpful holiday post. I happen to use TigerDirect quite a bit and one feature they have that I find very useful, especially around the holidays if you are buying electronics. Tiger provides an excellent resource that they call their Additional Resources Knowledge and Information – apparently they could not agree on what to call it so they threw in all the words they wrote on the white board. Regardless, it is very useful. Here is a link to the Resources.

tiger_direct_resourcesI particularly like their guides, for example they have one on basic networking as a refresher or to point your friends and family to if they consider you to the “tech guy/gal” and you are tired of fixing everyone’s issues. I doubt that is the case as I am sure you enjoy being the tech person in the family a whole lot.

Holiday Hook Ups of the Electronic Kind
What led me to this post is my desire to determine how to best connect old components with new ones, media centers, computers, TVs etc. Here is a quick HDMI tutorial that I found helpful.

Happy Holidays and enjoy all the electronics you may be getting or giving. If you need assistance take a look at the Tiger information.

New eBook

I put out a new eBook today. The first book was over 40 pages and too much content. So instead we decided to create a straight forward book focused on just setting up a new website with domain as quickly as possible. This book walks you through a set up to be done in merely an hour or two and and entire year of website hosting as well as domain registration for under $50.

Dare I say you actually could give a domain and website as a Christmas gift? Simply turn over the login name and password to the recipient and they will have their own site, complete with domain and email. Regardless, subscribe to the newsletter on the right and the confirmation email will have a link to the book.

You Want a Faster Site

I was going to entitle this “you need a faster site” but it makes more sense to say “you WANT a faster site”. Why you ask? Of course there are the typical reasons of making sure you do not lose your visitors due to slow page time, but now it may effect your search results.

google_labs
Google Site Performance
Google now has a tab in the webmaster tools to view your site performance. Look under the “Labs” section within the webmaster tools and you will find “Site performance”. This information not only details the page load time for your site but also shows additional information about specific URLs.

google_site_performance
Individual Pages
The site performance tool highlights some of your pages showing the URL, size of the page, total requests and DNS lookups. More importantly these details are broken down into the individual elements. Finally they provide recommendations you can implement to improve individual page performance and overall site performance.

Effect Search Engine Rank?
Honestly I do not know, however a faster site overall cannot be a bad thing.

How to Incorporate as a Business and Why

I get a lot of questions about incorporation, how to and why, as well as venture capital and funding. I thought I would touch on the highlights of organizing a business and why.

Why Organize Your Business or Incorporate
Personally I like to embark only on tasks that make sense and are done for a reason. Therefore instead of just incorporating for the sake of doing it, let’s discuss why first. If you begin to operate a business, meaning you are incurring expenses and hopefully generating revenue, then you are officially in business. There are three main areas of concern: debts, liability and taxes. While a debt is typically considered a liability I am splitting it into financial debts and legal liabilities.

Sole Proprietor
By default you are a Sole Proprietor and while nothing needs to be done you may not want this particular classification and here is why. As a sole proprietor you are personally liable for the debts of the business.

Debts
If you were to obtain a loan with the business it would be obtained under your social security number and you would be personally liable if there were ever an issue. A common example, because you would be surprised how many do this, you may rent office space under your own name. The lease may be a 5 year lease and you have only yourself, two years later you have 10 employees and have increased the space. An issue comes up and the bill cannot be paid for some reason, maybe you took on a partner and they stole some money, now the landlord can come after you personally. You have put your personal assets and potentially your family at risk. As an aside I have known individuals to have incorporated but still sign personally for leases, they had their reasons but there are alternatives, they did not have to – a topic for another post.

Legal Liabilities
If there is ever a lawsuit relating to the business, as a sole proprietor you have again put your personal assets at risk.

Taxes
You will only be taxed once, there are other issues but this is the most important to keep this review brief.

Partnerships
I will touch on this briefly, but essentially there are: general partnerships and limited partnerships. As a general partner you will both be personally liable. Limited partners can invest in the business but “limit” their risk and exposure to the amount of money they invested. There are reasons for this structure, however for now I will focus on the more common below.

Corporations
The first thing to note is that as a corporation it is it’s own entity, a separate legal entity. Without getting into two many details, if done properly the business owners will avoid taking on liability for the debts and only the business will be accountable for the legal liabilities. However there is double taxation. The business is taxed and then the income that is paid to you is taxed on your personal return – hence the “double” taxation. Therefore you have probably heard of “C” and “S” corporations. Electing to be an “S” corporation with the IRS allows you to have your income flow through to you and not be taxed twice while maintaining the other debt and legal liability protections of a C corporation.

LLC
LLC’s have become more popular over time. The acronym stands for Limited Liability Company. An LLC provides the best of all worlds with the debts associated to the company, the legal liabilities associated with the company and you are effectively taxed once.

Conclusion
It should be said that every situation calls for a potentially different structure. There are also other issues such as the issuance of stock and how they are governed which may dictate one legal entity over another. However that being said it seems to be more popular these days for individuals to use LLCs as the entity of choice. There is also typically less paperwork and in some cases lower yearly fees for LLCs.

There is also the issue of choosing which state to incorporate in. Many choose their own state, depending on where they are doing business. Others choose states such as Delaware for their long history of case law and feeling of general certainty as how they would rule in various instances, others choose based on state tax and/or privacy.

Suggestion
GoDaddy provides incorporation services and you can lean more here on their Business Page.

* As a caveat I need to point out that this is not legal advice and there are exceptions to every scenario outlined above.
