The Measurement of Whispers Prologue*: It has been written that Sir Walter Raleigh wagered Queen Elizabeth I he could determine the weight of smoke issuing from his pipe. A daunting challenge at the time, the wager was settled by noting the weight of the tobacco he placed into his pipe and the remaining ash…“Your Majesty” said Raleigh, “cannot deny that the difference hath evaporated in smoke.” ”Truly I cannot,” was her reply. (story concludes at end)*****In the time before, business was simple.

Despite the little hiccup (be nice) we are experiencing in online advertising, experts widely agree that the market is set to grow a ton over the next several years.  Given the rise in Social Media, however, I have been thinking that maybe – just maybe – advertising (specifically) might be a bit smaller an opportunity.  [...]

THE END OF SECRECY I borrow the phrase “The End of Secrecy” from visionary and speaker Tim Sander’s recent blog post , where he reminds us “ You can’t hide anymore in the new digital world we live in…this is great news for good people. Secrecy is the ally to evil. Think about the future of business in a transparent world: No bad act gets hidden, no good act goes unnoticed. What does this mean? Same things I’ve been saying since 2002—nice, smart people succeed. “ Nice, smart people succeed.

Good perspective from @Ambercadabra: The only thing that will ever really highlight the GOOD potential in the social media world is if the people who “get it” spend their time doing solid, progressive work instead of peering over their shoulder at the people “doing it wrong”. altitudebranding.com, Keep Your Eye on The Ball , Aug 2009 The whole article, and especially the comments, are worth reading and sharing. Thought I’d share a quick embedded presentation here for folks who aren’t yet following me on SlideShare . (Although after performing tag-team PowerPoint Karaoke at PodCamp Boston, perhaps I should think twice?). Assembled Web And Social Media View more presentations from John Eckman . The goal of the presentation- a sanitized (client references removed) version of one given to a client this week – was to talk about: Social Media (and specifically how to get started with it)

Mayo’s reputation for being a forerunner when it comes to all things “social media” isn’t news to those in and around the healthcare space. But as part of some secondary research for another client, we visited a lot of healthcare organization’s Facebook pages. Mayo has 8,811 fans. That’s a big number (at least in the healthcare space). Far greater than many other well-known institutions.

August has been slow at Pitchers & Poets, but fear not. We’re getting back into the swing of things. Ted and I have a great new project underway (you’ll hear a lot about it in the coming weeks), and we’ve both settled nicely into the semblance of routine after cross-country moves.  Good things are coming so take this as a reminder to check back frequently, add us to your RSS feed, and engage with us on as many social media platforms as you possibly can.

According to Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business July 2009 “CMO Survey”, CMOs believe that the economy is turning the corner. How long it will take to get around the corner, though, is still anyone’s guess. Not surprisingly, low price still rules, with 34% of the 511 CMOs surveyed citing it as their #1  priority over the next 12 months. Also a sign of the times: online marketing, at +9.5%, leads the way in terms of planned spending growth.

I keep going back to this blurb that a friend wrote about growing up with online social media sites: we’re a bunch of vain, self-obsessed pseudo-intellectuals who are more interested in self-analysis than anything else. and i think a big part of why we throw so much of our lives on the internet is to gain insight from other people. maybe they can figure us out, if we can’t. The glory of three weeks without work or school or anything means I’ve had a lot of time to reflect on my life and goals, on my relationships with others and…myself.
