Last night, BoomTown moderated a really interesting panel for an organization called Girls in Tech, titled “Journalism 2.0 RoundTable.” Girls in Tech describes itself as a “social network enterprise focused on the engagement, education and empowerment of like-minded, professional, intelligent & influential women.” With those lofty requirements–combined with the fact that I was a girl when we had yet to land on the moon–I have no idea what I was doing there.

FACEBOOK LITE: The Early Details and Screenshots Hmmm. More activity from Facebook. This may be an assault on Twitter – but Twitter didn’t work because is was simple. It worked because of Tweetdeck, or Twhirl, or Twitter Search – i.e. because you could use and access Twitter in many ways from many places. Facebook has always had a twitterlike function in terms of its status updates (they did this well before Twitter was around). But because these were contained within the Facebook walled garden, they didn’t ‘become’ Twitter.

Don’t friend your boss on Facebook, and then complain about him or her, or your job. Ever. The latest social media scandal is being reported by The Next Web . This gaffe is epic: It’s simple to prevent these gaffes from happening: Don’t post anything in social media (Twitter, Facebook, your blog, Friendfeed, LinkedIn) that you would not want your parent, boss or an investigating police officer to read. Ever.

What are the marketing trends for 2010 and where does Social Media Figure in the mix? A report by Equation Research indicates some interesting trends that highlight that “Social Media” is certainly past being a fad and becoming mainstream. The 5 Highlights 1. Should sex offenders be allowed to use Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace and other social networking sites? Illinois Governor Pat Quinn (pictured) thinks not, and this week signed into law a bill that bans all registered sex offenders in his state from using social networks. This sounds satisfying on first listen – after all, why wouldn’t we want to take every possible measure to prevent the horrendous crimes of sex offenders? But many legal blogs are pointing out that the legislation is overzealous and possibly unconstitutional.
