When news broke that Facebook would allow specific user names for accounts and pages, I was thrilled – and a little worried. Despite the fact that my taxgirl moniker is trademarked, it hasn’t stopped folks from registering the name on a host of social media sites. What if , I thought, someone beat me to the punch? Fortunately, Facebook took this into consideration and allowed holders of intellectual property rights to restrict certain user names in advance. I signed taxgirl up right away – and then I waited.

When it comes to job prospects for this year’s incoming communications freshmen, P&T poll respondents definitively rejected the sentiments of the 80’s song “The Futures So Bright, I’ve Got to Wear Shades”. Some 86% of the those who took the poll last week said that it would be tough to impossible for future job seekers to find a gig when they graduate. Only one voter thought that there were “excellent” prospects for graduates with communications degrees.

I’ve been thinking and writing a lot lately about the power the “vocal minority” exert in social media.  I know it’s not a new phenomenon, but I’m still fascinated at the seismic shift it’s causing in the brand-consumer power dynamic.  And it’s not all cake and balloons. The latest dust-up that has me back on my soapbox has to do with ESPN.   Last week it was rumored – based on a single vague Tweet from an ESPN reporter – that ESPN had enacted a draconian social media policy.  Some of the most influential bloggers in all of bloggerville rushed to wag their finger at the network.

Mother of god, it happened. We never thought it would happen, but it really did. Twitter was down for an extended period of time ! The nightmare happened on Thursday. Mercifully, I was away, but I hear tell of the horrifying experience. Not only was Twitter down–Facebook and LiveJournal had some glitches! My god, it sounds like, it sounds like, a normal day on the Internet! Nevertheless, it left the addicted to social media questioning their existence and wondering how they operated only a couple years ago, when they were only on MySpace and Friendster.

In brief:  This summary – which includes excerpts from an exclusive interview Marc Overton, Orange VP of Wholesale, Business Development & Partnerships – examines the mobile operator’s mobile advertising strategy; outlines Monkey, the first of a slew of services specifically based on the Blyk model; and wraps up with insights from Alan Moore – an authority on social media marketing and founder of the Engagement Communication Consultancy SMLXL – who points out that content/services subsidized by  advertising may have to be more than free to fly.

Great article from the NYTimes about Boston’s Izea and the commercialization of social media.  Here’s a taste: Now that Twitter is essentially back to normal following last week’s cyberattack, it’s time to delve into an emerging issue that is already riling the Twittersphere: paid tweets. Izea, the marketing company behind a pay-per-post service that enables companies to pay bloggers for every post about their product or service, is now bringing its concept to Twitter.

The £1 Challenge was a noble idea: get one million people to donate just £1 in the space of four months to raise £1m for the British Heart Foundation. In the end, however, the attempt was dubbed by its organiser, Steve Trister, as a “catastrophic failure”, raising just £2,329 and receiving very little media coverage. Raising over £2k for charity is not to be sniffed at, but it is a long way from the £1m target, and in the video from Steve that draws a curtain over the challenge , he is visibly disappointed.
