Aweber started as an auto-repsonder and has perfected their auto-responder. The newsletter feature is much like ConstantContact and others. However, with one tool you can have both email newsletter managment and delivery as well as an autoresponder. Their service also provides the sign up forms for your lists to simply copy and paste into your site.

My newsletter list and auto-responder is managed through Aweber for only $19.95 a month and it handles both flawlessly. Since I have been using the subscribe code I have signed up thousands to my list with no effort on my part once it was set up.

Retention
The auto-responder sends emails that I have set up after a set amount of days from their first joining the list. These are sent in regular time intervals automatically without my interaction. It is on auto pilot. I can even send a newsletter at any time to the entire list, or a portion of it.

These mailings keep your audience coming back to your site, as long as your content is useful, desired, and compelling to your audience. What great retention tool to keep your site and brand in front of your visitors.

Reporting
The reporting shows each newsletter or auto-reponse that was sent:

• the number it was sent to
• the number that opened it
• the number that did not make it to the recipient, and
• the number that clicked a link within the mailing

All of these statistics help you determine the success of any one particular mailing and your audiences retention.

Earlier I wrote about how the domain parking with Sedo worked. However, you may Park Domains with GoDaddy or Park Domains with Sedo.

I chose to test with Sedo and have parked 47 domains with them, as they are free. When setting up the service you choose keywords, related to your domain, and categories. After half of a month I have domains earning only pennies and others close to $1. The basic analysis would say that if you can receive greater than $1 a month or $12 a year, then it makes sense to renew at any amount smaller than $12. Others that are not profitable you may want to let lapse or put up for sale.

However, another benefit of parking domains is to determine which of your parked domains receive the most traffic and click throughs. You are able to see not only the number of unique visits to your domain but also the click through rate of the advertisements placed on the domain. This information could be used when determining whether to develop the domain into a property. I clearly have some domains with much greater trafic than others and higher click through rates.

Domain parking may be more profitable if you have obtained domains that were once properties and have links to them already developed, or as some have done - create misspellings of other popular terms (it is not suggested you do this as it may be problematic).

To conclude the first follow up to this test, I have determined some domains I will let lapse, others I will continue to park with Sedo and a couple I will attempt to develop into properties as they have decent traffic and click through rates on content and advertisements related to the domain and the category I assigned to it.

Alexa announced today that their algorithms have changed. Alexa is a third party website ranking service. Alexa is free and until Compete and Quantcast came along Alexa was the only game in town. You may see your Alexa ranking have a sharp increase or decrease today.

Of course you can use statistic packages and analytics to view your traffic. However a site like Alexa is a third party independent verifier of website traffic. Many individuals may be suspect when you tell them your traffic because you are the owner of the site and the source of the traffic statistics. Showing someone the statistics from a third party is more easily believed and leaves less doubt.A second reason Alexa and the others are useful is the rankings, they show you how you rank in comparison to other websites. Therefore you can view the popularity of a website, page views per person, what countries the visitors are from and more. Quantcast even offers code to put on your pages in order to obtain even more information, it is helpful to show potential advertisers the demographics of your audience and have them originate from a third party.

Alexa first received their data from users that installed the Alexa toolbar. Many did not believe the rankings would be accurate if the toolbars were not installed in a large enough population then the sample size may not be valid. Currently they state that the new rankings also take data from other sources.

When determining where to focus your organic or paid search efforts, you may first want to target those with the most traffic and therefore the largest potential of referrers to your site. It is very interesting to find that the smaller sites achieve over a $1.00 eCPM while other sites, the medium and large sites, are in the 30 to 40 cent range.

Before someone can find your site in a search engine or directory you need to be listed in the search engines. Once you are listed you also want your new content to listed as well, as soon as you update it. However here is the difference between a directory and a search engine, a simplistic explanation:

Search engines

Search engines are able to catalog more than just your home page. A search engine, such as Google can keep track of all your webpages. However you need to be sure they know when you add new pages to your site, this can happen many ways. You can submit each individual page to a search engine, you can hope that the search engine finds your new page when it is linked from another page, or you can create a sitemap and let Google and others know the URL of the sitemap. A sitemap lists all the pages of you site, the search engine can parse the sitemap and find links to all your pages as well as other relevant information. More about sitemaps in another post. However, before any of your pages can be found you must have at least one page submitted. While most allow you to perform this task manually, there are hundreds of search engines to be listed on and using a submission service can save you time and also guarantee you are listed. Most search engines are free and some do not let you submit directly as they receive their search results from another search engine and display as their own.

Directories
Directories typically only list one URL, usually the top level or home page such as http://www.longest.com or http://www.longest.com/index.html as opposed to a deep linked page such as http://www.longest.com/2008/02/05/in-text-advertising/. Some directories are paid submission, such as Yahoo! where you must pay to be listed, at least in their directory. There are some directories that other engines receive initial links from as well.

Therefore the plan is to:
1. have your home page submitted and listed in search engines and directories;
2. be sure the search engines have the most efficient way to know when you have updated a page or added a new page, and
3. be sure to update your listings if the search engine or directory require you to do so.

This post will address number 1 above to be sure you are submitted, then following up and tracking your progress will be discussed and explained in another post. Number 2 and 3 can be solved by a variety of methods such as providing an XML site map, more in another post.

Note that while some search engines such as Google drive the majority of the search traffic, a benefit in being listed in multiple places is having links back to your site. Links to your site help with search engine rankings, more in another post.
