Step 1 : Get a Website and Domain

The first step is to set up your site and ideally obtain your own domain name.

You can easily start a blog for free at the wordpress hosted site, however I recommend you get your own domain and host wordpress (see below).

First - Get a Domain

Obtain your own domain name and use keywords that are related to your sites content (theNewCarReviews.com , theListofBestRecipes.com etc.). GoDaddy has a great tool that suggests domains for you if the domain you search for is taken.

Get your domain here from GoDaddy.com - World’s #1 Domain Name Registrar

Once you visit GoDaddy you will need to search on potential domain names. The first page of the GoDaddy is very busy so take a look at the search box in the upper left and start by typing in your first idea for a domain name. You will see this search box:

godaddy domain search.

Do not become discouraged as finding a domain name is difficult. You will see that GoDaddy has provided a tool to suggest names that they believe are similar to the name you are looking for. Once you find a domain name that is not already registered you will see a screen with a check mark such as this one:
domain not taken

Once you have found a domain name that is not yet taken you can proceed to checkout and obtain your domain name, scroll down the page and find the checkout button which looks like this:
godaddy checkout

The process of checking out will prompt you to create an account name and password. Start a spreadsheet or write down your login names and passwords as you will be creating many for various sites.

Second - Get Hosting

Now that you have your domain you need a place to host your own blog and install wordpress. This site is hosted at HostMonster and uses WordPresss.

Here are 3 hosting companies:
(1) Get your HostMonster Account. Click here to Get HostMonster for only $6.95 a month * Recommended

(2) FREE Domain with Web Hosting Purchase Web Hosting as low as $9.95 a month here

(3) Ultra Hosting as low as $5.95 a month and they always have specials

On the homepage you will see a “Sign Up Now” button, and on the next page you will be able to enter the domain name you just purchased under the “Transfer Clients” title as you have a domain now:

Once you have completed the process check your email for your welcome from HostMonster. They will send a login for your account with them and an IP address as well as FTP login information, more about FTP and setup in Article 2. You will also receive a login to your control panel through the HostMonster home page on the upper right.

Once you login to your account you will see a screen with a link to the “cPanel Hosting” with the “Click Here” link:
cpanel hostmonster
Once you are in the control panel there are many valuable tools such as the web statistics named “Webalizer”, see the screen shot below. A future article will explain how to setup Google Analytics which is an excellent free website statistics tool:

Congratulations, you now have your own domain name and hosting account. Now for step 3 you will point the domain with GoDaddy to the hosting account at HostMonster.com.

Third - Point Domain to Hosting Account

Go to GoDaddy and login with your login name and password. On the right hand side you will see the word Domains, place your mouse over it and a drop down menu will appear, choose My Domains.

Next you will see your domain hyperlinked, click on your domain and then click on the Nameservers image godaddy nameservers. You will then see the field for Nameserver 1 and replace the existing information with nameservers in the HostMonster welcome email, which is probably NS1.HOSTMONSTER.COM, and replace Nameserver 2 with NS2.HOSTMONSTER.COM, hit the orange OK button and you are done. It will take at least a couple of hours, and maybe a day, for the domain to point to your hosting account. You now have your domain, your hosting account, and have pointed the domain to your web space. Congrats.
