Step 3 : Sign up for Revenue and Traffic

Once you have your site hosting, domain name, and your site setup it is time to start joining affiliate programs. Two that are easy to use and good for generating revenue and providing advertising as well as links into your site are below.

Generate Revenue

The first revenue generating program is AdBrite. By placing code on your pages advertisements are placed where you place the code. You are paid when these advertisements are clicked on by visitors. Before an advertisement appears the page is automatically reviewed and a relevant advertisement is placed. If the content is related to cars an advertisement for cars may appear. This contextual advertisement is used to increase the chances that an advertisement is clicked more often, the click-thru rate. The higher the click-thru rate the more revenue you will make.

The second revenue generating program is Text Link Ads, you simply place the code on your page and they sell the ad space for you. Once you have a decent amount of web traffic this can be a quick easy way to $100 a month or more.

Advertising Your Site

You can advertise your site by paying to place links to your site on other sites. You can even choose they exact site to advertise, balancing traffic and relevance which often dictates price. Start off by receiving free advertising, sign up now with Text Link Ads.

Both programs allow you to generate revenue by placing code on your pages and they sell the advertising for you. Both programs also allow you to advertise your site on others to drive traffic and relevant visitors to your site. Keep a spreadsheet with all your logins and passwords. More posts will have more programs.

Step 2 : Setup the Site

Once you have your site hosting and domain name you need to setup wordpress by downloading it, then uploading it to your site and installing.

First - Download WordPress

First you will download the free WordPress code and save it on your computer desktop.

Go to the WordPress site here and click to download the .zip file.

Second - Install Yourself or Obtain Help

To install yourself you will need to first get a file transfer program in order to transfer the files to your webhost you will need a file transfer program (called an FTP program).

I use CyberDuck for the mac - Cyberduck is found here or FileZilla for Windows - FileZilla is found here.

To have the site setup for you, I recommend you use a freelance site to have it installed for you. You simply post a request such as “install wordpress”, receive bids, choose one, escrow payment and release payment once your site has been successfully installed.

I recommend Scriptlance here or oDesk here, if you want someone else to install.

If you decided to host at HostMonster they will send you the FTP information to enter into the FTP program. Here are the steps to install.

Third - Copy Wordpress Files

After you have downloaded and installed one of the above ftp programs you will enter in the host name, which is your domain name such as longest.com , your User name and Password which are supplied by HostMonster. See the image below.

ftp program
Click the Connect button and you will be connected to the server. Next you will see the screen below.

ftp program view
The left side will show the files on your desktop computer and the right side will show the files on your server. You will navigate on the right side to the /httpdocs/ directory. On the left hand side you will find the WordPress files after you unzipped the file you downloaded. This image shows all the file and directory names.

wpinstall_3.jpg

You then highlight the files on the left and drag and drop them on the right. You will see the status in the bottom frame of the program while the files are uploaded.

Fourth - Create Database

Login to your HostMonster account and choose the database icon to create a database, user name and then associate the user name with the database. Once logged in click this icon wpinstall_create_db_1.jpg

Next you will create a database name, pick any name you like, see below:

wpinstall_create_db_2.jpg
Next you create a user name, pick any name you like, then use the drop down under User to choose the user name you just created and use the drop down under Database to choose the database you just created. See screenshot below.

wpinstall_create_db_3.jpg
Now there is only one remaining step.

Fifth - Modify One File and Done

Next you open up the file named wp-config-sample.php, but you will need to rename it to wp-config.php when done. There are instructions included with the WordPress download - the readme file. So either read that file or simply add the database name, user name and password you just created above in the wp-config file and re-upload using the ftp program. Next go to your domain name and include /wp-admin/install.php, for example http://www.domain.com/wp-admin/install.php. You will be asked for a title for the blog, your email and then receive a login and password. That is it, you are up and running!

Step 1 : Get a Website and Domain

The first step is to set up your site and ideally obtain your own domain name.

You can easily start a blog for free at the wordpress hosted site, however I recommend you get your own domain and host wordpress (see below).

First - Get a Domain

Obtain your own domain name and use keywords that are related to your sites content (theNewCarReviews.com , theListofBestRecipes.com etc.). GoDaddy has a great tool that suggests domains for you if the domain you search for is taken.

Get your domain here from GoDaddy.com - World’s #1 Domain Name Registrar

Once you visit GoDaddy you will need to search on potential domain names. The first page of the GoDaddy is very busy so take a look at the search box in the upper left and start by typing in your first idea for a domain name. You will see this search box:

godaddy domain search.

Do not become discouraged as finding a domain name is difficult. You will see that GoDaddy has provided a tool to suggest names that they believe are similar to the name you are looking for. Once you find a domain name that is not already registered you will see a screen with a check mark such as this one:
domain not taken

Once you have found a domain name that is not yet taken you can proceed to checkout and obtain your domain name, scroll down the page and find the checkout button which looks like this:
godaddy checkout

The process of checking out will prompt you to create an account name and password. Start a spreadsheet or write down your login names and passwords as you will be creating many for various sites.

Second - Get Hosting

Now that you have your domain you need a place to host your own blog and install wordpress. This site is hosted at HostMonster and uses WordPresss.

Here are 3 hosting companies:
(1) Get your HostMonster Account. Click here to Get HostMonster for only $6.95 a month * Recommended

(2) FREE Domain with Web Hosting Purchase Web Hosting as low as $9.95 a month here

(3) Ultra Hosting as low as $5.95 a month and they always have specials

On the homepage you will see a “Sign Up Now” button, and on the next page you will be able to enter the domain name you just purchased under the “Transfer Clients” title as you have a domain now:

hosting account
Once you have completed the process check your email for your welcome from HostMonster. They will send a login for your account with them and an IP address as well as FTP login information, more about FTP and setup in Article 2. You will also receive a login to your control panel through the HostMonster home page on the upper right.

hostmonster login
Once you login to your account you will see a screen with a link to the “cPanel Hosting” with the “Click Here” link:
cpanel hostmonster
Once you are in the control panel there are many valuable tools such as the web statistics named “Webalizer”, see the screen shot below. A future article will explain how to setup Google Analytics which is an excellent free website statistics tool:

webalizer
Congratulations, you now have your own domain name and hosting account. Now for step 3 you will point the domain with GoDaddy to the hosting account at HostMonster.com.

Third - Point Domain to Hosting Account

Go to GoDaddy and login with your login name and password. On the right hand side you will see the word Domains, place your mouse over it and a drop down menu will appear, choose My Domains.

godaddy domains
Next you will see your domain hyperlinked, click on your domain and then click on the Nameservers image godaddy nameservers. You will then see the field for Nameserver 1 and replace the existing information with nameservers in the HostMonster welcome email, which is probably NS1.HOSTMONSTER.COM, and replace Nameserver 2 with NS2.HOSTMONSTER.COM, hit the orange OK button and you are done. It will take at least a couple of hours, and maybe a day, for the domain to point to your hosting account. You now have your domain, your hosting account, and have pointed the domain to your web space. Congrats.

After submitting your URL, you may then submit your Sitemap and you will see a link to do just that.

sitemap for google

Typically your sitemap will have a .xml extension. There are many ways to create a sitemap, including adding a plugin for wordpress that creates one for you. By using a sitemap that is generated for you, you will be assured your most recent pages are in the sitemap and therefore indexed by Google.

More on sitemaps and generating one in another post.

Agloco is Dead

Agloco died a while ago, I am just now posting. It is interesting that they died a second death.

Years ago there was AllAdvantage that paid you to surf. They had a ViewBar and paid a flat rate per hour for your viewing. Ads were displayed as you let the bar sit on your desktop. There were three issues at the time. The first was fraud as people were setting up bots to move the mouse and occasionally click on banners so the program thought they were in front of the computer and credited them with the time.

However the larger issue was the fact that they decided to pay about 50 cents an hour before they had revenue to cover it.  The assumption was that they needed to pay to obtain users, then once they reached critical mass for advertisers to find their reach attractive.  Therefore there expenses grew substantially and exponentially as they registered more users before their advertising revenue took off.  This was also during a time that the banner prices, CPM, were falling and obtaining a 50 cent hourly rate became increasingly difficult.

Lastly was the issue of incentives.  Advertisers did not like the idea that they may pay per click, CPC, and the person may only be clicking because they know it will help them earn money.

Many other issues existed, but those were the main ones.

A group of individuals that were involved with the first AllAdvantage company started Agloco.  They started by limiting the number of hours you could receive credit for.  Although you could use the bar as much as you liked, and they provided text ads and search within the bar.

Reasons as to why Agloco closed were not stated, however you can no longer get to their website.

It remains a mystery as to why they closed, or does it?

Adding Keywords and Description to a Wordpress Template

Description and keywords are important tags for your website. Search engines look at both of these tags as one of the many ways in which to determine how to rank your sites relevance.

In the Wordpress installations and themes, the keyword and description code is not in the template. The code is simple to copy and paste and looks like this:

< meta name=”keywords” content=”keyword, keyword, keyword” />
< meta name="description" content="description of the site" />

To determine if the template you are using in Wordpress has these tags or not, follow these steps:

  • Login to your Wordpress admin
  • Choose the Presentation menu item
  • Choose the Theme Editor menu item
  • on the right hand menu choose the header or sometimes header.php

Now you scroll down through the code to determine if the items above are present. If not, you then place them between the < head> and < /head> tags. To make it easier you may paste them just above the tag.

The keywords should be keywords that you would like your site found under. A tool to help uncover keywords is Wordtracker (get a Free Trial here). Add you keywords separated by a comma.

Next write a concise site description also using keywords.

It is that simple.

In-Text Advertising

I tried in-text advertising on this site for months and just turned it off today. I have two sites running the ads and the more highly targeted (content) site of mine received a better eCPM however both were very low.

Therefore I have removed the In-Text advertising tags as they did not yield as much revenue as I had hoped and the bright color highlighting ad underlining was distracting to site visitors. An example is below.

in-text advertising
The site was yielding a $.04 eCPM which is not worth having the ads. I recommend other sources of revenue such as Text-Link-Ads, you can sign up here for free, and if you wish to advertise you can receive free $ to use. Text-Link-Ads allows you to sell a set number of links on your site and that has yielded much more revenue than the In-Text Advertising.

Test Advertising Placement

The images below show the before and after of the ad placement on the right hand navigation. The image on the left shows the right hand navigation as it has been since this site was started. The image on the right shows the right hand navigation as of the posting of this article.

The current placement of the advertising is shown higher on the right hand navigation. I will watch the revenue received to determine if that makes a difference. To raise the CPC advertising I have lowered the 125×125 advertising. Therefore, looking at the images below you will see the difference is the block that reads “Ads” and shows a Toyota car has been moved.

After I collect some data I will post the results of whether the higher placement made a difference. Note that this change still does not place the advertising over the fold, or on the first screen that a visitor sees.
