Using WordTracker

Our original article regarding the benefits of WordTracker is here. A subsequent test was started here.

When using WordTracker, here is how it is helpful. For our test we are promoting Quicken Loans. You enter a word such as loans or home loan. Then you receive a score for the following:

WordTracker Header

  • keyword tells you the word it suggests or the word you chose.
  • count is the number of times a particular keyword has appeared in their database.
  • predict is to predict the number of searches that may occur on any given day throughout the top 10 search engines
  • dig allows you to find more specific words, and therefore niche searches that may not be widely used / optimized.

You then choose the keywords you would like to focus on, you may export the list or provide a competition analysis letting you know how likely it is that others are optimizing for that keyword. If it is not highly optimized there is an opportunity for you to reap that traffic.

Word Tracker Competition Analysis

The fields are:

  • KEI Analysis: the more popular your keywords are, and the less competition they have
  • count: the number of times a particular keyword has appeared in their database.
  • 24 hrs: the predicted daily traffic for each keyword in the search engine you chose to evaluate
  • competing: the number of other sites also competing for the optimization of that word or phrase

Once you have chosen your keywords you must then either use them in a pay per click search engine such as Google or create unique pages for your site using those keywords.

WordTracker Test : Does WordTracker Really Help?

Wordtracker Keyword Research

WordTracker is a tool to increase your site traffic faster and cheaper when used appropriately. Especially in conjunction with posts that use permalinks (see our past article) having those keywords.

WordTracker let’s you determine what people are searching for on the Web. It also helps you identify keywords and phrases that are relevant to your site or business and most likely to be used as queries by search engine visitors. Using these words wisely can assist in organic traffic, meaning someone finds you in a search engine more often driving traffic to you.

You can also use the multitude of keywords that WordTracker finds for you to obtain pay per click search engine traffic at more reasonable prices if WordTracker uncovers keywords that are not bid on frequently.

For our test we will attempt create two pages that both focus on Quicken Loans
. Test pages:

  • Page 1 : Use words directly from the Quicken Loans home page to write an article about Quicken Loans. See Page 1 here.
  • Page 2 : Use words found by WordTracker in the title and body of the article
  • . See Page 2 here.

After month one, two and three, I will release the results showing the number of page hits each of the two articles above in Page 1 and Page 2 receive.

AdBrite Full Page Ad Test II

This test began on October 6, 2007, to determine how much revenue could be made from AdBrite full page ads. Beginning of the test and an explanation of their ad product is here.

In summary, the AdBrite full page ads are full screen ads that drive users directly to an advertiser’s website or landing page between the pages of a publisher’s website. Each user only sees one per visit so they are not annoyed with many, you can control this.

This is how they look, your site header at the top, a button to skip the ad and return to your site and the advertiser below:
AdBrite Full Page Ads

Here are the results, from October 6, 2007 to November 13, 2007:

  • 34,890 Zone Views
  • 548 Impressions
  • $1.04
The results show that while 34,890 impressions were available, only 548 were filled with advertisements. Total revenue was $1.04 which is not bad, essentially that would create a cost per thousand (CPM) of $1.89 if all the impressions were filled. You may see a lower or higher CPM if your site is in a less or more desirable category, respectively.

Since each user will only see 1 advertisement in a 24 hour period this is not a bad source of additional revenue as long as you have decent inventory.

AdBrite’s reporting is amazing, you are able to see what sites and advertisements were displayed as interstitials. You are also able to see what they paid and how many impressions were shown. I suggest you try all their revenue generating products.

Blog Ranking and Blog Popularity : Text Link Ads Blog Juice Calculator

Text-Link-Ads has a great tool to determine your blogs ranking, popularity, and worth based on a formula they apply.

The tool is called the Blog Juice Calculator. You enter your blog URL and then choose a category to rank your blog against. The formula for determining your ranking, what they call your juice is comprised of four factors:

  • Bloglines subscribers : 40% of the score
  • Alexa rank : 15% of the score
  • Technorati ranking : 30% of the score
  • Technorati inbound links : 15% of the score

Your site is then compared and ranked along with others in the category you choose. You may even compare your site to any other site regardless of category. See an example below, a great tool to determine your sites worth when compared to other similar sites.

Banned from Google Adsense

I wrote about adding Google Adsense ads to your site in order to make money, that story is here.

Then I wrote about marketing tests to send people to splash pages in order to increase RSS subscriptions, multiple articles written under the Marketing Tests category.

Some of the traffic comes from individuals clicking advertisements, such as through Google ads, and some of the networks pay their users a portion of the click revenue to click through. Therefore I had purchased some traffic from such a site. As an example, I pay 2 cents per click and the person that clicks receives 1 cent. Now this traffic comes from their site to my site.

Once at my site the person is no longer paid and is not paid to do anything on my site, they only need to visit it. Google AdSense sent me an email stating that my traffic from these types of sites is unacceptable. I am confused since these individuals are not paid to click any advertisement or anything else on my site. None the less I have turned off the traffic.

The lesson learned is that there are certain sites Google Adsense bans as providing traffic to your site so be careful, you do not want to lose Google Adsense on your site.

Quest for $10,000 : October 2007 Analysis

This is the second monthly summary in the quest for $10,000 a month in revenue, for October. We will be tracking the site growth both in traffic and revenue here on the site growth page. This site is unique, we show you exactly what our progress is towards $10,000 a month. We discuss what we tried, what worked or did not work.

I have begun to increase the tests and show every detail of the tests so you know exactly what did and did not work. All the tests can be found in the marketing tests category.

The first month was September when the site launched on 9/4/07, this is the first full month.

SITE STATISTICS Launch September October
Alexa 2,712,399 408,377 237,610
Quantcast NA 6,083,285 595,003
Technorati Ranking NA 640,383 550,426
Technorati Authority NA 10 15
Feedburner 1 25 113

* Alexa is a 3 month average

REVENUE Launch September October
Advertising Networks $ 0 $ 0.48 $ 5.18
Direct Sales $ 0 $ 0 $ 0
Affiliate Programs $ 0 $ 0 $ 0
TOTAL REVENUE $ 0.00 $ 0.48 $ 5.18

EXPENSES Launch September October
Reviews $0 $50 $20
Advertising $0 $0 $180.65
Development $0 $470 $0
TOTAL SPENT $0 $520 $200.65

We also perform various marketing tests, see all of the marketing tests here.Differences this month include revenue from the addition of AdBrite full page advertisements, one per visitor. I found that only a small percentage of the ad inventory was actually used. Two things we did not do this month were paying for Facebook installations and obtaining more Agloco referrals.See the monthly site growth summarized here. This was the first full month, October, next month in November we will focus on affiliate programs and site traffic.

Site Traffic Test : ReviewMe - September III Traffic Results

I used Review Me to purchase reviews of the site. These reviews were obtained in September, and today as of November 3rd looking back here are the goals and the results.

  • Goal 1: Reviews
  • Goal 2: Site Traffic
  • Goal 3: Links Back
  • Goal 4: Low Cost

Five articles were obtained, and the results are as follows:

  • Goal 1: Reviews [ OBTAINED ] - Obtained 5 well written and thought out reviews
  • Goal 2: Site Traffic [ NOT OBTAINED ] - Looking back at statistics, there were only 2 referrals directly from the articles (in one month)
  • Goal 3: Links Back [ OBTAINED ] - Each review provided at least one link back to the site and their Alexa rankings ranged from 25,000 to 300,000
  • Goal 4: Low Cost [ OBTAINED ] - I offered the lowest allowed per post, $10 per post.

The test showed that for $50 if the goal is obtain traffic this may not be the best, however the articles will not be removed from these sites and therefore traffic will be obtained every month. The largest variable here is that I only offered $10 per post and allowed any site to participate. Another test in which I pick the reviewer and pay substantially more will be attempted to compare results. If one of your goals is to create consistent monthly reviews/posts from third parties this is a cost effective alternative if you do not have the time to create relationships and obtain them organically.

RSS Subscription Results for AdBrite : Full Page Ads

Below are the AdBrite results for the increasing RSS subscriptions test with full page ads. Cost per click campaigns were run previously and results are here.

An identical splash page was created for the AdBrite test as with all the others. As all the other tests I tracked results using the ccount script, one link for subscribing to the RSS feed and one link for subscribing via email.

Results of the campaign to the splash page:

  • $ .001 cost per view
  • $ .88 total spend
  • 881 views of the splash page

Results once on the splash page:

  • 10 clicks to the Subscribe RSS Link
  • 17 clicks to the Subscribe via Email Link
  • Total: 27 clicks (not necessarily subscriptions, see below)

Conclusion:
Unfortunately once you are on the splash page and click the subscribe RSS link it takes you off the site to a feedburner page, the person must then add to an RSS reader and you have no way of tracking once they are off your site. The same holds true for the subscription via email, once you enter your email on the splash page and click to subscribe it pops up a window and requires that you enter the email again. This means that we do not know if the 10 and 17 resulted in subscriptions.

Essentially the 27 clicks to subscribe (assuming they were all subscriptions) cost a total of $.88. Therefore each click or subscription cost $ .03. This will be compared to the other campaign results to know if that is a good result.
